Title: Tank Support crack
Post by: ksj on May 28, 2017, 10:38:17 AM
Hello. This morning I noticed a brand new crack in the top middle support of my 90g aquarium. It's kind of scaring me. I was going to go to Big Al's today to possibly buy some cory cats but now I'm worried about the structural integrity of my tank. I've emptied out 1/3rd of the water for now. Would anyone have advice on what to do? If I should be worried or not?

Is it cracked from melting? is it the standard plastic TOP circumference piece that also is used for siting Glass Canopy's onto?

Any pics, because If the ''center'' piece is giving away, I'm more surprised that your tank is not already leaking and yes I'd be worried. More questions than answers right now without more info my friend.

Now I see the pic. That is indeed bad. What are you using for lights? Those tank braces don't pull away like that normally unless there is a xxxx load of stress, weight on that brace. ''not knowing all the details'' I would empty that tank ASAP.

Agreed. It's a miracle that tank hasn't started leaking or worse.  With that much stress on the brace (depending on the age of the tank I suppose) for it to simply peel away like that is rather marvelous. Empty the tank ASAP.

Its a previously owned tank. The last owner had lots of cichlids in it. Theres a drilled pipe in the upper left corner for a sump pump. The middle brace is a thick hard plastic. Lights are LED marineland.

I really adore this tank. Surely its possible to reinforce it somehow?

Call me crazy but it almost looks like a reptile tank? Glass looks thinner than what I'd imagine for a 90G? but I could be wrong.
Did the glass bow out? when it was filled? Only other thing is possible the age of the tank and something might have falling onto the top at one point??

If nothing was done to the tank then maybe the tank wasn't level and the stress finally caused it to crack.  If you have a four foot level or a straight edge, you can place it across the front of the tank to see if it's bulging.

To fix it, you will need to research gluing a piece of acrylic in place of the center brace.
