Any website design people out there?

I am looking for help getting a work-related website up and going.  I'm a bit hesitant to randomly pick a design company though, since I know absolutely nothing about website design and would probably get totally hosed and sold all kind of stuff I don't need.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get started?  Or recommend someone?
