The pool enclosure by-law is up for review at the City.
http://www.ottawa.ca/en/city_hall/planningprojectsreports/public_consult/poolenclosure/index.htm

"The By-law currently applies to ponds that are capable of holding 24 or more inches of water. Ponds with their sloped sides may not present a hazard to children as compared to in-ground or above ground pools. "

"The City is proposing the following changes:
.......
Exemption for hot tubs, whirlpools and spas with permanent substantial, structurally adequate lockable lids, and backyard ponds"

While the description here speaks to exempting ponds - it is always a good idea for interested parties to write in with their comments.

Anyone who has a pond, plans to get one, or enjoys looking at them without them being surrounded by a big fence should send a quick note to the staffperson () listed on the link.

A simple comment along the lines of "As a fish hobbyist in Ottawa, I support the exemption of backyard ponds from this by-law" would be useful. Make sure to include your name and address. Deadline for comments is Mar 9.
