Banned User

All,

I feel it responsible as webmaster to let you know when the executive has made a decision to ban someone.  You've given us your trust in managing this forum so I feel you should know our reasons for excluding someone.

cichlidsforme, AKA GreenTerror, AKA JackDempsey, AKA Beardy, AKA AfricanCichlids is the same person; he has a long history of irritating posts but has also made personal threats against users as well as made prank phone calls, etc.  A lot of childish behaviour that we do not want here.  

At this time, all of his known aliases have been banned and any new ones he creates will be banned as well.  We will be changing the OVAS account policy so that administrators must verify new accounts before they are allowed access to the forums.

As well, because of the personal threats and other reasons I can't divulge publicly, a file is being assembled and may be forwarded to the police for their investigation.

It is unfortunate that these events have occurred and I regret having to take these actions, but this user has left us with no choice.

Kudos to you. There is no room here for childish behaviour, this is a forum meant for adults to act in an adult manner. We don't need a rotten apple to spoil the bunch. I hope the "investigation" you will persue goes in your favour, it might teach this person a valuable lesson.

That being said, I finally took some time to go through our millions of flyers we now get here in Barrhaven and guess what? They have a smoker bbq at Loblaws!!!! and the wifey said I can buy one! w00t!!

I got this PM from cichlidsforme (I was locking his threads this morning), he asked me why, and I told him he was a banned user.

It's pretty rediculous actually, I mean, we're a bunch of fish geeks, and we have to deal with a guy like this

Threatening a person is not held lightly by police. Be it online or in person, it holds the same.

Unfortunately, with the way the current board setup is coded, there isn't much I can do to prevent people from creating new accounts.  But that's ok, from now on I'm reviewing each new account and will ban those that are obvious.

Our new board (still in dev) will require all new accounts to be approved by an admin before they are allowed on; this should help a great deal.

then you also would have to use the link in your email to verify that is you..??

Yes, that exists now.  But, he just keeps creating gmail accounts.

With Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, and many many many more (including email forwarders) it's impossible to use that as a system of verification. Well, not impossible, but rather useless.

I've seen some sites that don't allow emails from any of those free online providers... however it's a pain and makes it impossible for some to sign up.

Security needs to be about keeping undesirable people out... not EVERYBODY out.

Everyone uses gmail/msn/yahoo these days simply as a spam filter.  Send your private email address to people you trust... send web-service emails to email lists/forums/websites etc....

It may sound dumb, but another reason this is hard is because, really, we're a public forum for people to talk about fish.  We're not running a company remote access system here, or a site with confidential data.  

An atittude of "public" combined with trying to keep a single user out is, well, a situation where no perfect solution exists.

Simple Solution.. Forget the security to keep him out.  Just delete all inapropriate posts the guy makes, then ban that account.  Get a few more moderators, Have a report this post to a moderator button so even if a mod is not on they will be emailed to delete/check that post.

or call his ISP and they will probally shut him down. Or atleast tell his mommy and daddy that there son is being immature and to get a grip on his internet habits.

Then I would never have time to read posts because I'd be busy deleting them.

Its too bad that something can't be done more about this guy..cos we are a good group of focused people..that are trusting..and as such we post our own phone numbers and emails on here..to get replies..I guess should go back to pm's instead..cos who knows who is on here (or any site) that have access to this information.  I can't believe he doesn't have something better to do.

perhaps you could do like the ncf internet company at carleton university. i had to fax over some id, adress and phone  number. i also had to call in to get my password. that would probably help against the freakies.
