To all hobbyist (( OVAS member or not)with an interest in planted aquariums, it has been sometime since we got together, Spring is in the air so why not have a spring affair, talk plants etc enjoy some camaraderie, food ( pot Luck?)& drinks.
I`m suggesting we do this in a public venue that gives us the ability to mingle & socialize.
This can be done on a weekend, so lets hear who is interested & suggestions of a place.
Come one come all
Regards
I'm in.
me too! :)
I'm definitely interested in attending my first one.
I'd be interested in coming out and meeting people
I'm in as well! Looks like we got participants but no suggestions for locations yet. We thinking more pubish or weekend brunch'ish?
Count me in!
This is looking promising, since no one has made any suggestions on time, day & place.
I`ll make some suggestions & we can go from there.
April - 3, 9, 10 ?
Place - Pizza joint,Chinese buffet ( the one on Merrivale (Emerald plaza), Buffet des Continents
Time - 1.00 Pm, 2.00 PM, 3 PM?
Any others or preference from the above mentioned?
I`m sure there are others who will be on board in time - Zolta? Mike?,Lucius?,Holly? even those that are thinking of Planted tanks & need help
I will also let Jason from Critter Jungle know, as he has mentioned a few customers were inquiring.
Let`s have some fun
If we go for food, can I suggest we pick a place close to one of the vendors? This way we can visit them afterwards.
Swiss Chalet by Critter Jungle
Eclipse (Asian Buffet) by BA's east
Lots of choices by BA's west
Le Buffet des continents close to LaNiche

Looking forward to it!
I'm in! Would be great to see if we can coordinate with new shipment instore so we can ensure we're not there when they're low in stock - unless they get weekly shipments. Excited regardless - not in that area too often!
Marked on my calender.

I`m thinking we do a draw, but divi up the soils in 3 kg bags of soil & 3 x 3kg bags of the powder
The ferts, into 2x 150 ml of the Premium Fertilizer & 2 x 150 ml of the Specialized Fertilizer
This way more people gets a sample to try.

I think it's best to just draw for it. There's not much use for small amounts of substrates that's been divided up.

Hey guys, if any of you are growing micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' and have extra or some clippings that you could share I would be interested in trying it out. I don't mind growing it emersed first if needed to cultivate more.
Can of course return the favor if anyone is looking for something I have.

Christmas moss and flame moss too in small amounts.
I have the following available:
Dwarf Sag
Hydrocotyle Tripartita
Hygrophila Corymbosa 'Compacta'
Limnophila Aromitica
Lindernia India
Peter I grow it but timing is bad, as I just thinned it out.
See you all tomorrow.

It was great to see you guys... it has been a while for me. Won't be as long next time ;D
A big thanks to Errol, and to Tropica for the goodies. I have already put the soil to good use 8)
Great fun, lots of laughs! Thanks again to Errol and La Niche for their efforts. I had a great time as always.
Nice seeing everybody again.
It was great meeting everyone today!
Thanks Errol for setting this up.
This has been one of the best Sunday mornings, great food, great fellow hobbyist sharing various experiences, generous discount from La Niche et Moi and a very welcomed offering from Kyle @ Tropica Canada.
Thanks to every one that made my day ;)
Congratulations to all the winners that benefited from the Tropica goodies bag -
Holly - the planting tweezer,
missavgp - the beautiful S scissors

Thanks for organizing this Errol, I can't think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon
Thanks for an AMAZING afternoon! A big shout out to Errol for getting this going! Thanks as well to La Niche et Moi for the generous discount - it was my first time at the new location and I am just as impressed with it as I was with the old one - glad to see the quality maintained! Definitely will be back and I encourage everyone to go check them out for their healthy livestock and plants, and pristine tanks! Not a salt guy here but a few of us marvelled at their large salt tank!
Also a big thank you for the excitement provided by Tropica! I happened to win a half-portion of the soil and I am excited to get it set up in a new nano tank! Great initiative on your part Kyle - definitely got all of us excited! A neat idea to continue for future sessions from other vendors/retailers for sure!
Last but not least! Thanks fellow plantaholics for the usual great company! Never a dull event with all you plant freaks! Looking forward to the next one already! Thanks again!
Ok Guy`s & Girls, at the last plantahoclic, i mentioned that i will try to plan a day for a road trip to Aquasense in Montreal with the Montreal planted hobbyist joining us for a fun filled day.
Biulu ( Montreal) has agreed to organize the BBQ & coordinate the Montreal folks.
Luke is going to work out what specials or discounts he can offer that day.
Ideally we can do it on a Saturday or Sunday in June, so please chime in with your thoughts.
Errol
It would most likely last the whole day so I would prefer a Saturday.
I'm in, too, but I'm out of the country until June 12. So any weekend after that. I can drive as well.
I'd be interested, mid to late June works better for me.
In as well - Mid to late June is fine by me.
How about Saturday June 18 th?
Wolfiewill thanks for offering to drive, as usual i`ll be happy ride shot gun with you ;).
The 18th works for me. BBQs and aquariums. How can I say no?
The 18th sounds good. Remember that 1st of July is official moving day in Montreal so the closer we get to that date, the more people will be busy arranging their moving and actually be moving.
I don't know how many of you know Aquarius; it is a relatively small shop but they specialise in fish that look exceptionally nice in planted tanks like small shoaling fish and even catfish. Some fish they have regularly in stock are: ember tetras, microdevario kubotai, cpd's, glolight danios and other. Here is their website: http://aquariusweb.qc.ca/.
They have an option to choose all the fish they have in stock to give you an idea what interesting fish they have. If you are interested, we can add it to the programme.

I have two A series chihiros both on rimless tanks. They're well measured and fit snug on rimless. They would definitely not fit a rimmed tank.

Do you fine them hot to touch? I could always buy one size up and place them on the rim.

They do get a bit hot, like any LED really, but I bought these $2 dimmers off ebay which help reduce the intensity. So they barely get warm to the touch now.

This sounds like it will be a lot of fun... tried to free up the day, but alas, it does not appear to be in the cards. :(
A shame too, as I would have picked up a fire 60p and possible an LED light.

Ouch! talk about kicking a guy when he is down. You have given me new incentive to try to find a sitter for the day... I knew that family would mess up important things like hobbies one day :D
Guy`s , Elonore sent this message, please let`s hear your interest so we can firm things up.
QuoteI would like to try to get a tentative schedule together, especially the starting time and place (probably Aquasense).
And maybe something of a 20 minute theme before everybody starts shopping? What about plant substrates/substrate fertilisation? We could go from dirted to commercial substrates like fluorite and Luke could introduce his Chinese substrate, talking about root tabs, maybe even capping vs non-capping, mixing of substrates and the myths around it.
Are you guys interested in going to Aquarius? They have two very nicely scaped tanks there and a lot of nice smaller fishes that look great in planted tanks. I could also ask the owner if they can get in more 'planted tank' rarer species and if one of their staff could give a short introduction to several of these fish.
I am talking about fish like pseudomugil species, badis, microrasbora species, small loaches, some gobies etc.
Anyway, let me know what you think and when would be good for you
We seemed to be getting steered towards this Aquarius place so might as well include it.
I'm interested but will need a ride. Is the plan still for the 18th?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Are there any more details as to date and time for this? I am interested but it depends on family commitments whether or not I can make it.
At this time it is suggested we leave Ottawa 7.00 7.30 on the 18th.
Visit Aquarius pet store, where Elonore is trying to coordinate decent stock on livestock etc & a knowledgeable staff member to answer & educate us for about 1 -1.5 hrs.
Then to Aquasense, one suggestion is to have someone do a short presentation on substrates including dirt & any participant that would like to do a short show & tell either with stills or video clips of their tank or tanks.
The BBQ is going to be pot luck The Montreal hobbyist will coordinate , so that every one do not show up with adult beverages ;), we will need someone to do likewise here - volunteers? further details will be coming soon.
How many are willing to drive their vehicles ? of course the passengers will be on the hook for gas cost ;)
The more feed back i can get the faster things can be finalized.
Lets do this & have some fun.
I would be interested in coming and I can drive (room for 3 more) if anyone needs a lift. It looks like there are some interesting fish at Aquarius.

The following have indicated a willingness to go:

Anyone else interested, please let us know by this weekend, of course this will require one more vehicle.
I want make it clear - this is an undertaking of the planted tank hobbyist as such, the club(OVAS) bears no responsibility for anything.
So far the folks in Montreal are fired up for this gathering & is shaping up for a fun day.
Errol
I will be going but this will more of a shopping trip for me and I probably won't be staying for the BBQ afterwards.
I will not be able to join you guys this time. :(
Hi guys,
Just sent a long PM to Charlie with more details for the day. Aquarius will try to order some nice rarer fish for us and an employee (Genevieve) will give a brief introduction to each of these fish so you know what you're getting into if they appeal to you.
When at Luke's (Aquasense) there will be a short presentation on providing nutrients through the substrate (so not through the water column). We have a projector and it would be great if you could bring some shots of some of your planted tanks and give a brief explanation about it and where you are planning on going with it (I asked the same from the Mtl participants).
Luke is working on some special discounts on that day and will communicate these to Charlie and me. And while you guys shop, we will try to get the BBQ going (weather permitting).
Gary will not participate in the day but will come by to bring Jody's gularis and probably grab a beer during the BBQ.
Any comments, suggestions are welcome. I have told the people here that we meet at Aquarius at 11.30 am.
Looking forward to it!
Thanks Biulu, i hope a few more planted folks will join us.
Sounds like a fantastic planted day ;) & augers well for hobbyist from both cities.
Errol
Will there be plants for sale? ;)
Yes
This looks like a lot of fun, unfortunately I've got too much on the go at the moment and I won't be able to make the trip.

Programme for the exchange with the Ottawa planted tank hobbyists on June 18.
11.30 meeting at Aquarius. They will be trying to get in some rarer fish that are great for planted tanks and we will be given a small introduction to these fish so you know what you are getting into.
From there we move on to Aquasense. There will be a short presentation on fertilisation of plants through the substrate.
Ottawa people will be bringing some pictures of their tanks and give an explanation on what they are doing, how they got there etc. Mtl participants are encouraged to bring an USB with their tanks. Also an excellent opportunity to get answers on issues with plants!
Then it is shopping time for those that want to. Aquasense will be having some special discounts that day, just for us!
And while you guys go around the store, we will get the BBQ up and running. We want to do it in the form of a potluck so, please confirm your participation and I will coordinate who brings what to avoid we only end up with six packs of beer or salads LOL. Errol will do the same for the Ottawa side.
I am starting off: I will bring sate ayam (chicken satay) with peanut sauce.
It is definitively possible to join us later or for some parts of the programme only. However let me know, especially if you want to be in the BBQ. Please confirm here on the forum whether you are coming or not.
I've got family in town this week so I can't make it. Have fun all.

Too bad Mike, we have 7 from Ottawa & 9-10 in Montreal, can`t wait.
If there anyone sitting on the fence i think there might be room for 1 or 2 more seats available .
So we are all on the same page the following is the schedule for Saturday.
Quote
I am posting the updated programme here for everybody to know:
10.00 Start at Aquarius, an employee will give us a short introduction to rarer fish great for planted tanks they have available at that moment
11.30 Arrival at Aquasense, presentation on planted tank experiences from different participants
12.00 Light lunch that we will order in
13.00 Shopping/socialising
14.00 Presentation on fertilisation through the substrate or we continue the informal exchange until people want to go home or continue elsewhere.
We have an offer from an OVAS member to tell his experiences/lessons learned with an overseas journey and how he found his planted tanks. This will be a great topic now that the holidays are approaching!
I am prepared to talk about my experiences with the dry start method and HC cuba, the initial success, the problems I encountered and where this tank stands now.
All participants are encouraged to bring pictures of their tanks (on an USB stick or mobile phone that we can connect to a laptop) and give us a few details about what they have been doing with the tank, what works, what doesn't. It is also a great opportunity to get answers on issues as we have some knowledgeable people participating!
Although the objective of the day is to exchange experiences and socialise, Aquasense is offering a 10% discount on all their tanks and stands, as well as 20% on their driftwood for that day only!
.
What a great day, great shopping & camaraderie
Most of all FUN!
From Montreal: we are very grateful to Charlie to have thought of this! A great crowd from OVAS that came to visit us; knowledgeable and fun. It was a great experience with lots of exchange of information and socialising.
I am already looking forward to the next one; this time in Ottawa. Get ready for a plant swap and a presentation of great personal experiences with planted tanks!
A few pics.

Thanks for an amazing time! Always worth the meetups! Was good seeing everyone again!
Sorry I missed it, but glad to see everyone had a great time :) ... did you clean out any stores?
Sorry for the late reply, but this was one of the best trips to date. I really liked the vibe at the Aquasense Workshop. Thanks to Errol, ours hosts and to the Montreal people who we met. Great time, lots of good ideas!
