I have a hermit crab that moved into a snail shell of mine that has some nice mushrooms and zoos on it.  Obviously ther zoos and mushrooms don't like being knocked around like this and they are always closed, and probably will die off.

Is there a way of getting the hermit crab to switch into another shell without killing it?

You could try gluing the shell to a bigger rock, and place a replacement shell of similar size into claws reach.
They are intelligent enough to know when an existing shell is not working for them.

However... Its not worth the trouble if you ask me.
