since originally posting this thread, I have reduced to 1/2 bucket changes with water heated 1 degree more than the tank.

salinity has been mirrored.
Water trickled back into the tank with a small tube.

no more unhappy corals!

best way to do water changes in a tank like that is set up 2 buckets (same size) have 2 power heads with flex piping. put one in the tank and one in the bucket at opposite ends. and do a blood transfusion type procedure. plug both pumps into a spare power supply with power switch off. when both pumps are placed then swith on power bar. they will add and remove water at same rate and no need to fool around with the water level.

Also easier to add water in the back chambers so it slowly goes into the front display
