This year OVAS is looking for ways to spice up our monthly meetings as is it`s a great monthly event , but we are always looking for ways to step it up a notch.
One of the ideas that is being considered i tos have a few( maybe 3 meetings) in a more social atmosphere such as a family oriented restaurant/bar, three areas considered are Barrhaven, Kanata & Orleans, what are you feelings on this?
Regards

Feivel

Barhaven kanata and orleans are all as far from me as they are to each other. Althought i do have family in orleans.

Great idea...especially if for those meetings we could try a different night of the week. It would be really nice to get a place with a large separate room that can be used for group functions.

Barrhaven would be nice as I live south of the City.

If we have enough interest from people in each area, and can find a venue that will accommodate in each part of town, there is no reason that we can't move the location for each event.  The basic idea is to change the format up and have more people come out.
I haz reef tanks.

if it's on the cusp of Kanata I might be able to do it, but I am not keen on driving 2 hrs! :) 1 1/2 hrs is good enough!

Clarification, the 3 areas mentioned are not up for a vote as to which one we should go to, we are thinking of possibly 3 meetings one in each of the above mentioned area.
We are looking for input as to what you think of the idea & any places in those areas that is family friendly, fairly quiet & would allow such a gathering.
Regards
P.S. Barrhaven has one location in Greenfields that is willing to accommodate us on  a Monday night

bitterman

I as always will goto any of the locations. whats another 5-10 km when your coming 50-60+km already :)

Greenfields sounds like a good place to me

In the east end, Grace O'Malley's in Orleans has a good meeting room, so does the Tartan Pub on Innes Rd. Both have great food too!!   :)

One of the clubs I was with holds there annual awards banquet at Summerhay's (Corner of Baseline and Woodroffe).  They have a designated meeting room and it is sort of centrally located so it appeased everyone.

What would kind of nice is to find a place that actually has a display tank! That would likely reduce the potential spots to Asian cuisine... (which is fine with me)

Hmm... where was that thread with all the display tank spots in Ottawa?

Theres one saltwater tank left in capones. He had a few but downgraded. Great food. Been there a few times. average pricing too. 15-20 for pasta 25-30 for steak :-)

Barrhaven for sure. Kanata as well

The casino has a saltwater tank.

Just asking, but for those that do find the new regular meeting place, are you trying to keep them from meeting the club members? :)

But, seriously, if you are paying rent for the new place each month, why waste the money and go somewhere else? I would agree that the breakfast meetings (in addition to the regular meetings) were a good idea though.

.
did we say it is confirmed?
did we say when it`s happening?
Do you think we would not provide enough notice if it happens?

How did you arrive at the conclusion we will be wasting money to go somewhere else?

Sorry, for the first part, I was just kidding (which is why I added the happy face)

But for the second part, most city rentals I've seen are yearly contracts, whether you use the room or not. I may have been mistaken.

Dave again you are making assumptions on what you knew
When dealing with city facilities & renting for a extensive period you choose which months you need the room for, just like we don`t rent for the months of June July August & December.
So the question will you attend & do you know of a place in the 3 areas mentioned?.

I second bitterman on this and will go wherever we have decided.  It's only once a month where a bunch of us could get together do some fish chats and share experiences.

As a matter of fact, going to a different place once in a while may not be a bad idea and may bring more people to the meeting as we are not doing the same old same old.

There's a restaurant called Pepper Garden on Montreal Rd. that has a pathetic african tank.  They don't have a separate room though.  It's been a number of years since I was there though.

lucius

I was at the new East Side Mario's in Orleans yesterday and they have a separate meeting room but it seemed small.  No fish tanks though.

Display tank? well the ones I've seen is at Denny's on Merivale...the back of the restaurant is sort of private so potentially could reserve. would have to check...the food well, it's family friendly with some healthy choices. They have a marine tank.

There's a chinese place, like a buffet type, that has a fancy goldfish tank but can't remember where.

An unlikely place for a tank was at the Maytag appliance store on Huntclub/Merivale road. What a nice surprise and that one was nice! Even took a picture. I just had to tell you guys.

Hookup

How many people?

Would someone like to do it at their house?

dpatte

I still like Charlie's idea of a bar. Actually, a few years ago, after the meetings on Elgin we used to go out to a bar - Leiutenants Pump I believe (about 6-8 of us did, at least).

I could have it at my house, but then you would have to tip my wife for serving the beer. LOL

Denny's at South Keys also has a display tank.

...but it's still Dennys :(

I haven't joined yet, and when I do I'm not sure how many meetings I'll go to, but casual/social meetings are always better in my books :)

Also, beer.

Anja

Love the idea. I have way too little time for this hobby atm, and not having to bus 1hr each way would give me a chance to at least come out once in a while.

For the Kanata meetings, would any of the places in the Centrum work, maybe? It has ample parking, easy bus access and a fish store. ;o)
