4000k? and plants

Hey
i have some metal halides that have 4000k bulbs, could i use these to grow some plants? or should i go and buy some new ones(i'd rather not because they cost a fortune ie:$75, more then the fixtures cost me!) also are there any places where i could buy some rarer plants near ottawa, or do i have to go online?
