Cheato is a type of algae, a macro algae.  It's commonly used as a phosphate remover/organic remove by growing it in your system somewhere.  The idea being that Cheato grows faster than other algae's, is controllable (cause it's like a pile of noodles) and consumes/exports phosphates & organics before the bad stuff can use it...

Look up some fuge's on RC or Melvee's site for good info related.


Also, Ottawa Inverts has some amazing other types of Macro Algae in one of their tanks... some people grow this stuff in their main tanks, and after looking at it, you can see why.... kind of the "planted tank" of the saltwater world....   (just do not add tangs..lol)
