Title: Some pics of the new corals
Post by: murgus on October 17, 2006, 10:32:46 PM
Here are some pictures of the new corals.  Can anyone tell me if I need to worry about the mushrooms down the road (are the gonna become fish-eaters)?

Hi murgus..........to our knowledge there isn't a type of mushroom
which will eat fish.........
On the other hand there are fish and crusteceans which will eat
mushrooms...........I would be more worried about that.
however if you have reef safe specimens there is nothing to worry about.

For your information there are fish eating anemones......
such as some carpet anemones and some LTA species.
cheers.

Sorry YT, I would have to disagree. Giant or elephant ear mushrooms will eat fish. I have personally seen a giant mushroom spitting out the spin and bones of 2 percs that were hotsting in it for about a week.

It is a little stressed out - apparently it does not like the bright light that it was under in its previous home.  I have great hopes for it's recovery in my more modest setup :D

Yes.... Murgus...........you do have elephant ears.......LOL LOL LOL. ;D
Guess we learn something new everyday........
I was looking for info on fish eating mushrooms and I could not find any..
however; if redbelly states what he has observed I guess
there are specimens which eat fish.
Murgus........I don't think you have those types by the looks of pictures.

so you can sleep well tonight.
cheers.

The zoos are awesome, where did you get them?

Not sure what kind of mushrooms they are, fuzzy mushrooms?  Hairy mushrooms eat fish, and grow large enough to do so....

I like the goby, is he eating?

Agreed with Julie and redbelly for the mushrooms, and yes they get really big I have a rock with some 6" -7"hairy mushrooms on it, hasnt eaten anything yet but ??? Mind you the hex tank they are in has some a few other fish eaters in it as well, "and still looking for more fish eaters tubes etc"  hence I keep "cheaper" fish in there :)

Yup - he scoots out and grabs his share.  You know, he's not the flashiest looking fish but definitely has a cool personality!

My hairy mushroom (which in max are about 4-5") will gladly eat pieces of shrimp or other meaty stuff, but not a fish - they don't sting so the fish will be immobilized. My clowns hosted in them until I got anemones.
For my knowledge only "elephant ear" mushroom anemone - Amplexidiscus fenestrafer will gladly eat any fish it canget: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/reef/corallimorph/corallimorph.htm
Other types are pretty safe. You will have to worry if yours become 6-7" in diameter...

And, BTW, nice additions!

Regards

That's good to hear.  My clown fish aren't interested in them but the clown goby sure likes them!

It should be Elephant Ears.
In some sources they are also called Rhodactis: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/shroomfdgfaqs.htm

BTW, last time I visited Ray he had a beatiful large Elephant Ear about 8-9" in diameter...
