Title: Floating Plants
Post by: busdriver on March 09, 2007, 10:43:34 AM
One of the books I was reading mentioned something about floating plants being good for discus, does anyone know the names of some of these plants and would they do well in a 30 inch deep aquarium?
I was also thinking of putting fake plants in the tank, does anyone have anything good or bad to say about that and what preferences do you have? :-\

Try frogbit, it's a huge, hardy plant that puts out long gorgeous roots.  Once you have it, you'll never get rid of it (it's like duckweed the size of your hand!)

Don't do fake plants unless you absolutely have to! The real ones are so much nicer :)

Totally agree, Zoe gave me some of this and it is amazing and the long roots look really cool in the tank.

I killed duck weed in my tank once the water change system was turned on :( But my Anubias blooms go figure)

I always used floating  plants in my discus aquariums ... I used floating water sprite , and that was sometimes messy but this giant duckweed sounds cool .
this way you can have plants if you want them and use a clean bottom tank also
Great idea

I looked it up on the internet and it is on the bad plant list in several northern states  as invasive ...LOL

yes it definitely is invasive, but so pretty ;D

try putting a "LF" in the classifieds, guys - or wait a few weeks and I'll probably have some for sale at the auction ;)

I used to have it on my 55g, I loved it! It grows well and the long roots look really cool.

I actually have a problem with my lighting is too high, 96 watts over a 33 gallon, hence I'm having a big problem with hair algae.  I have amonao shrimps, flag fish and a bushynose pleco to deal with it, but its a battle.  I'm thinking if I had some of this stuff, it my filter out some of the light going into my tank, not enough to stop my other plants from growing, but enough to help the algae growth.  I'd appreciate getting some of this stuff, if you are still willing to get rid of some.

I have 2 SAE's, 5 amano shrimp, and 2 flag fish to take care of it, and its still there.  I know my lighting is the problem, I'm going to cut back on the time the lights are on to see if that helps.
