Title: Attaching moss to driftwood
Post by: Ormarr on June 10, 2007, 09:19:02 AM
I was wondering, what type of moss can easily be attached to pieces of driftwood?  I like the moss-covered look on driftwood and would like to do the same in my new 75 gallon tank.

Any of the mosses look good, and they are all attached in the same way. They take some time to attach themselves to anything, so we encourage the moss to take their time and really cling to something by using fishing line and tying them on. After about six months or so it is usually stuck on there well enough to remove the fishing line.

You can also just staple it to the wood.  By the time the moss has attached, the staple has rusted away.

Wouldn't rust release harmful chemicals in your water?

Rust is just iron oxide... perfectly harmless.  I had an apisto tank with a piece of drifwood secured to slate.  The bolt that it was secured to rusted pretty heavily, I never lost a single fish.

Elastic band also works. By the time it breaks apart the moss should already attach. Same result with java fern. I like the look of fern better than the moss and it is easier to attach to objects.

good luck :)

I also use the elastic band method much easier to deal with than fishing line, although don't tighten the elastic so tight that you end up killing the plant. :)

Thanks for the tips!  I'll try both methods and see what works best for me.
