Title: new plants in 10g aquarium
Post by: Taltos on October 30, 2007, 08:41:17 PM
Hello all....I am new to the aquarium hobby, and everyone has been very helpful - I have purchased two plants for my 10g aquarium - one is a java fern, and the other is an arubius.  I have had them in the tank for about one week and the java plant has black spots popping up all over it - If it was one of my houseplants, I would say it is not a good thing.  Any suggestions???
I leave my light on for over 8 hours per day as recommended.

Anubias and java fern are both low light plants.  They are also plants that should not be buried in the substrate.  Instead, they should be tied down to rock or driftwood.

It is normal for Java to get a little blotchy.  It is just transplant shock.

Let me know if your java doesn't make it I'll give you some to get started. But anubias grows to slow have no extra... if you bury the roots they will likely rot...

Do i just let the anubius roots sit on the rocks - the plant doesnt stay still then???
I am leaving my light on for over 8 hours - is this too long for these plants???

thanks again

You can use a cotton thread to secure the plant to the rock or driftwood.  Eventually, the roots will cling to the rock/wood and the cotton will deteriorate.

Planted tanks can have lights on from 8 to 12 hours a day.

Problem with cotton is if you have shrimp, they can go at it!!! I had some pesky amanos that would eat at the cotton and mess things up lol  >:(
