Title: Aquarium Prices
Post by: FreshWaterTank on November 25, 2007, 09:32:27 PM
Me and the wife are heading over to watertown tomorrow, first trip in years. Are prices for aquarium kits; external filters etc. that much different that in ontario. I understand the need to count gas; taxes etc but just curious if it would be worth visting some shops for aquarium stuff. Anyone have any shopping experinces to share, thanks.

I honestly don't remember seeing a LFS in Watertown.  Now, if you are buying a kit from Walmart, I'm sure the price won't be too bad.  If there is a pet store there with good prices, by all means let us know.

I went to watertown last year. It was actually in search of fish medications.  I didn't find any box stores or big pet stores.  Watertown had a mall pet store at SalmonRun but it wasn't anything I'd drive there for.

I never thought about Walmart.  I wonder if Target has a fish section too?

I hear walmart up here is dropping prices on a whole lot of stuff.

There is a PetCo, I payed just over 8$ for a 10g there. I think it was in Watertown, it was near the target. I found that it wasnt a bad place price wise, mind you all I bought were reptile accessories.

Art and I took a trip to Watertown a few weeks ago...the only petstore they have listed is a little mom and pop store that has a turtle walking around loose! :) Their prices weren't too bad on some things but on others were really high. But it was fun to look! It was tucked in behind a few stores and a bit tricky to find!

Thanks for the feed back, sounds like maybe a trip to Walmart may be the best bet, have a good week all.

Definately saw the PetCo there, next to the Target.  I didn't stop in, so I can't comment on prices.  That whole shopping area on hwy 3 looks fairly new.

I'm going there are Friday. I'll scour the area to see what I can find. I'll be there till late Sunday so I'll have some time while the spousal unit is clothes shopping.

Cross-border shopping...

I don't know how it works for aquaria products in terms of warranty, but I know from working at Best Buy that major electronics have their warranties VOIDED if they cross international borders. That means if you buy a tv in the USA the manufacture warranty doesn't apply in Canada and is in fact void. Just something to think about looking into if buying equipment and such... Especially something like a 265 gallon tank. ;)

Yeah, but I lose my warranty if I don't put it on a store bought stand, which likely isn't going to happen anyway, so I'm not that concerned.  I'll be damnned if I'm putting 1.3 metric tonnes on particleboard. :)

Not sure about a 265 G tank, but for a 90G tank only, the
warranty is 3 mos.  The warranty goes up to 10 years (?)
if you buy their stand as well.

I'm pretty sure the line will be "if you're crazy enough to buy this thing, you're pretty much on your own."

I saw a 150g at PetSmart yesterday that was reduced by 250$...  It ALMOST convinced my husband we needed a second tank!!!

I guess PetSmart is starting to catch up.  Don't want to go to BA, afraid of seeing how much cheaper our 2 month old 46G tank is!!!

APW, what are the dimensions of the 265 gallon in case they ask? I'm going to go to Petco to see what they have to offer.

You're going to need a wet-suit to clean it.

Sorry for the thread-jacking, couldn't resist!

Or grap your shampoo and a bar of soap and take a bath while you are cleaning it
Sorry too that I just thread-jacked.

Just a quick post about USA prices. A full cross border shopping thread will appear in the lounge shortly.

I was unable to get a price on a 265 gallon tank because the manager does not work weekends. ::)

The employee offered me a discontinued 125 gallon tank for $200. All Glass.

When I said I was from Canada he said that Big Als prices in Canada are much better than what Petco can do in the USA. From what I looked at the price was pretty much the same, give or take a dollar or two, from our Canadian retailers. I looked at filters, test kits, pythons, and as far as I can tell, at least in northern New York, we are not paying more for the same product.

I'm not saying there are no deals to be had, just I didn't see any great difference.
