Hi all,
in my new start up I'm using some logs out of my yard. They are aged, approx. 2 years, bark has come off. I scrubbed them first, put them in and they look great. Now there seems to be some kind of translucent film growing on it.
I think they might be maple, if it is sap coming out, could it hurt plants or fish????

A nice piece of driftwood can add real character to a tank. However, before you add it to your tank its always a good idea to put it in a big pot of water and boil it first, have you done that?
I put it in hot water and a few tbs of bleach bath, then soaked it in hot water for a while to remove any traces.
do you know what kind of wood it is?
Nerine,
As I said above, maple.
Boil for a long while and /or bake for many hours on low.
I did after advice given me here and have had no problems. I boiled mine on a low setting for about 2 hours. Your lucky you didn't lose any fish, they could of been poisoned.
