Title: Construction of a Moss Wall
Post by: jrs on April 10, 2008, 11:59:35 PM
I just got a whole bunch of Taiwan moss sent to me so I am making a moss wall with it and thought I would snap a few shot of the process.  It is 14"x22" in size

What a cool idea!  I love it!  I may now attempt something similar, but with plain old Java moss. ;)

Question: the staples you are using, won't they rust underwater and contaminate everything?

Unfortunately because of the long stringy nature of Java fronds, they dont work very well in moss walls.

I posted this on my home board and a few people were asking about the staples as well.  You can sew the sheets together with thread.

Yes the staples rust after awhile.  I keep very few fish in my tanks so the only relavent thing to me is that it has no effects on plants LOL

Where did you pick up that screen stuff?  I'm looking to make a similar thing, but with Riccia in its place.  I'll be avoiding staples, though, heh.

You can find it at most craft stores , including Wal Mart ( Craft Dept.)

Yes, Wal-mart, Michael's and likely fabric stores will have it.  I should try it too :)

I think I'm going to try it with Christmas Moss on a small scale first, then start a full wall.  I don't have enough moss for a full wall yet :)

I keep playing with the idea but fear my small fish getting in behind there... could be a death trap! I love the idea.

Picture of how it looks in the tank?

I have done many of these and fish becoming trapped is not a problem.  You suction cup the wall to the glass.  I don't have a pic of it in the tank but here is the progression of a Singapore moss wall

So, what types of moss work with this?  Java moss is out......

It looks great!

Christmas, Singapore and Taiwan have worked well for me.

Weeping would probably work well too.  I have my doubts abouts about Erect, Flame, Fissidens, Java, and Willow.
