I know some people who have done this, in the end it will be more cost effective to buy a professionaly built tank. Trust me!
Hi
I thought about doing what you are planning to do. Check the price of glass and the cost to cut the stuff. Believe me unless you are interested in a certain custom size tank, its cheaper to buy it

Is there an echo in here?
I went the custom sized tank route, and was surprised to find that it wasn't really any more money than a standard sized tank. Mine is a large tank, though -- a custom small tank is probably a lot more expensive than a standard small tank. My tank is 165 gallons -- it only cost about 50$ more than a 180 gallon (mine is the same height and width as the 180, but 6" shorter)

Yah but then add the work involved as opposed to walking into a store and buying one, less work AND less money.
The only profitable way is if you need it a custom size as you appeared to need. If you are building a standard tank size, in the end it is going to be much less hassle and less cost.
ALSO keep in mind that 95% of the home insurance companies will NOT insure you for water damage caused by a NONprofessionaly built talk in you're home if it leaks. Keep that deep in you're mind, in the end the damage could far exceed the savings as well!
