Title: Migrating a Big tank to a Bigger tank.
Post by: tim_s on December 01, 2008, 01:04:11 PM
Hi Everyone,

I am migrating my tank into a bigger tank.

One of my friends suggested a pond pump and simply pump the water over to the new one.

I thought for an after use I treat water to get the PH right and with conditioner and this happens in a big rubber maid container under the tank.

I thought about rigging it so when I vaccum the tank out I could just turn it on and it will return the water ... Possibly more gracefully then my bucket method.

1. Anything I should know before attempting this?
2. Anyone recommend a pump and hosing?

I use to do somethign similar. I used a Pantair QuitOne 1200. Pumps with more force will disturb any plants and fish for sure. Restricting the flow of pump cause extra wear on their diaphram. Just use plumbing parts from Home Depot. Mine was just a hose I used with a fitting that hung on the edge so I didn't have to hold it in place.

What might be help full is have an extra big bin of the same water your going to move with a filter on it, for extra just in case, oh and don't forget to have some towels near by, and a extra bucket.

What kind of fish are you moving?

Absolutely ... that is what I am attempting to do ... move 60% of the original water and replace the last 40% with fresh.  Basically the equiv of a water change.

And I am moving a Piranha.

This is all part of a bigger plan.

You can order the Pantair from BA here in town. I also think Pet Smart sells them off the shelf.

Think I will check it out of I can get one right off the shelf.  The stats on it seem decent enough.

Issues with leaking?
Anything bad to say about the pump I should know about?

No it is a great pump. They have several sizes just depends how far and how much force you want to pump with. And they are very quite.
