Title: Clamp-on lights??
Post by: jeffd on March 30, 2009, 06:23:11 PM
hi, i'm planning on a diy lighting solution for a refugium using compact fluorescents from home depot. Anyone know where they sell those clamp-on lights that will accept a compact fluorescents type bulbs? I looked at HD last time i was there and didnt see any. Not looking for anything expensive as the salt will kill it within a year probably.

thanks. Jeff

Sorry - I got mine at home depot too.  I need another for a freshwater tank so you might have saved me a trip.

I got a couple of those el-cheapo clamp lights at Rona last year.  The kind with the spring clip and the aluminium reflector.  I have one over my remote fuge right now.

As I recall, they have 2 different ones there, on with a small reflector and one with a larger one.  I think they cost me $10 each or something close.

In the lighting/wiring section.

thanks for the reply guys.

Adam, are you using the flood light style 2700k or were you able to find a higher K in this type of bulb at HD? On melevreef site he mentions that the 5100k was available online ( so i guess not available at HD )

thanks, Jeff

i am using 2 2700k ones but that site was made in 2004 since then those bulbs became way more popular because they save lots of power i am sure you could find them at home depo

I use the Tensor Vision Max 18WESU-CL light that you can get at Rona for about 10 bucks. Its quite bright, although fairly long in over all length but the best part is that the peak wavelength is in the 6400 K range, closely matching the sun's. It works great for plants etc, better than the incandescent "grow lights," last longer and use less power. Only draw back is that it's not in a spotlight format.
