Title: Octopus 150 Recirc - In Sump
Post by: Patow on April 20, 2009, 09:37:15 AM
I just picked up an Octopus 150 Recirc Skimmer from Pat, and am looking to install it in my sump. I'm replacing my Tunze 9010 for various reasons.

I wanted to install this skimmer externally, but I just don't have the room unfortunately. :)

My current baffle height/water level in the skimmer section of the sump in 19".

The top of the output of the skimmer is 15".

So I need to raise the skimmer up 4" with some sort of acrylic box, or glass shelf.

My question is what is the best way to accomplish raising this skimmer up with a running tank?

I could use glass or acrylic and mount the shelf in permanently. My concern would be the drying/setting time for silicone. I could drain the sump and install it, but most of the stuff I have available to me needs at least 24hrs to set.

I could also simply build a removeable shelf and just sit the skimmer on it.

Thoughts and opinions?

If anyone else has this skimmer installed in sump, I'd love to see some pics as well.

Thanks!

Dave

I have no experience with SW but would a 4" tall clay pot work? Could you just drop it in and set the skimmer on it? Maybe you could silicone the pot to the skimmer and let it set before dropping it in?

I'd just make a stand out of PVC with an eggcrate top. You probably have some of that stuff lying around from your tank build anyways.

Once you get it up and running - please post a pic.
I'd like to see that model up and running.

Thanks!

Agreed!
or even make the stand out of straight acrylic. It will be dry and safe to use within 24 hours.

If you use Weldon 16 you will be able to use it alot sooner.

Well you can use it quicker but the full drying time is 16 hours for methyl chloride or for weld on 16.

I had a bunch of acrylic lying around the house, so I'm building a shelf.

However, my wife stopped by Canus today, and they are fresh out of Methyl Chloride. Evidently she's the 10th person that has been in looking for it today. :) They are supposed to have some in tomorrow.

No idea where to get Weldon 16. Suggestions? Just in case Canus is delayed. I really want to get this sucker up and running. :)

Cheers,

Dave

I "think" Home Depot sells it.
