Hey. I'm about to purchase a current usa fixture used from a fellow reefing but have a question first. Does anyone know where these lights are manufactured?? USA I would assume?? If so, would I have to pay duty/gst/pst whatever on the package since it was made in usa because of some trade agreement?? If I am going to pay duties, what the percentage? The light is used from a fellow reefer on Nano-reef so just want to know what to expect before I go ahead. The value of the light is 150USD.
No Duty just GST/PST if your shipping to Canada then you would have to pay the UPS/FED EX charges on top of that.

legally you still need to declare and pay gst/pst when you cross the border, 80 minute drive+ other hassels to save what $20?
just get it shipped to your door and pay the brokerage fee (+taxes).
but you still pay taxes on an item just being shipped from a random person.....i taught that was only if u purchased it from a store....how about if it was a labelled as a gift?
over $50 gift or not you pay.

ah well....its only gst/pst so it will be like 30 bucks....i can live with that.. :)
They can charge you on any amount. Its really up to them.
If its $40 as a gift most times they let it go.
A $300 light as $50 they wouldnt go for.
Done this across the border for along time.
As for having it shipped to your door. You are going to pay the pst/gst and brokerage fees and the price that is list on the customs form.
What type of light is it?
Do any of the sponsors on here have one.

Its a current usa sunpod. Its the 16.5 inch 70watt mh version which is no longer made by them so I'm buying it used from the Nano-reef.com classifieds. Its 150USD and I told him to ship with USPS since most people said UPS/Fedex is more expensive and the brokerage fee will be lower. What kinda price am I looking at paying when it gets to the door then? I also that if something was made in USA and you go it shipped to Canada then there was a fee you didn't have to pay, vice something made in China and you buying it from a store in the US.
There is no brokerage fees with USPS.
There is no duty on items coming into Canada that are made in the US.

I was just about to type that in since I just found it on the page. So I'm looking at paying GST/PST only?? 14% or something else? This is alittle off topic for the forum and I apolgize(bad speller). This light is for my 5.5 gal and I'll post some pics once it arrives to show you guys.
Thanks for the info so far guys.
They might charge you more.Depending on if they want to let it slid or not. They dont call it Duty. They call it handling fees.
Its up to the guys at the customs.
It always varies.
Is it really worth driving an hour and a half to save $21 in taxes? If you have it shipped USPS you won't have to pay any brokerage, just the taxes when you receive it.
You will have to pay the taxes no matter what.
I guess all you can do is buy and see what happens. It will be $150USD converted in CAD then the pst/gst added.
Just make sure it's not UPS! USPS is the only way to go. UPS will screw you with brokerage fees every time.
I still say it's cheaper to drive and it's only a 40 min drive. Plus you can fill up on Gas which is much much cheaper there. But if not come back and let us know what you paid in brokerage fees.

Its being shipped via USPS so there is no brokerage fee. Its an agreement USPS and Canadapost came to to carry each others mail internationally. Only places like UPS and Fedex charge brokerage fees but I will let everyone know what I paid. And plus I live in Pembroke so its probably alittle bit of a longer drive for me also.
Well the light made it and didn't have to pay a cent at the door. It's almost set up. I'm creating a DIY lamp tree like the zeroedge ones. I'll post some pics once it's installed in a different thread
