Title: Soap dish fuge for nano cubes and sumpless aquariums
Post by: Bob the Nano on April 26, 2009, 10:50:20 PM
I have been lurking some of the American nano reefer forums and came across a novel idea that uses a clear soap dish to hold macro algae (cheato for example) and use it like a mini refugium for aquariums like nano cubes and ones without a sump in the main dispaly! basically the dish comes ready to hang with suction cups, just put it in a spot that gets light and flow. also I read it was a good Idea to turn it around every other day to make sure that the whole ball of algae get enough light! it seems like an inexpensive way to have all the benefits of a macro algae scrubber without the mess of modding a tank!

I plan on trying it very soon and I'll update with some pics and progress.

On a side note where can I find Cheato? I live in Pembroke and I don't think my LFS has any! There's only one other reefer thats lives close to me that has any but I don't think she has enough to share yet!!! ;)

Hey.  I have some....not much....but when I trim it I'll let you know.  I'm in Petawawa.

As for the soapdish idea.  I have seen those.  One thing you will notice is that strands of it will start to slowly escape your dish and start growing in your display.  You could always mod a AC70 like I use for a fuge or something alittle smaller.  I have a extra AC20, not sure if that will work for you or not.  Then in the back you can add some live rock rubble, cheateo, some filter floss, and you can even include carbon or another type of media if you want.  Adds a little more filtration, some extra volume, and if your not running a sump you can hide your heater in there.  PM me if you want more info....

thanks Skinner I have a jbj 24gallon nano and I'm not sure where I would put the hob filter right now! but that sounds like a really cool idea! I have plans to remove the top and suspend a 24" MH pendant above the tank in the fall then I would have room in the back to hang a hob fuge!! I'll definitely take some of your cheato when you trim some that would be great!

i have a nano, and i stuck a small chunk in the hole where the filter is. And put the filter back in, so i have the algae in front filter in back and it works awsome..there is enough light and flow.
