Title: Newbie question -re lighting & a new 20 gallon
Post by: RedFish on March 02, 2004, 07:36:42 PM
I have recently bought a 20 gal with 1 flourescent bulb.  I was hoping to have live plants (saw several members with plants for sale) but now am realizing that I will probably not have enough light.
I have seen conflicting posts (elsewhere).  I have read my 20 gal should need 60 watts min, but others have said their plants are growing well with less.  So my question is can I get away with this basic new aquarium kit, buy some tough low light plants and have a nice looking aquarium, or should I just take this kit back before I set it up, and save a few more months for a better aquarium kit?
Thanks!

plants need from 1-3 florescent watts per gallon depening on the type of plant.

for 1W per gallon try java ferns, hornwort (cool tank), crypts for starters

Hi,

Some cryptocorynes will do o.k. One of the best is Cryptocoryne x. willisiii, a small quickly multiplying hybrid. I have some growing in an unlit tank. It also does fine with up to 3 watts per gallon. It is very versatile. For most crypts I would prefer two lamps. If you can find it, Cryptocoryne affinis requires very little light.

Also java fern, Bolbitis heudelotti, java moss, various Anubias species, and even Hygrophila polysperma.  I think Sagittaria should work as well.

Regards,

Thanks for the replies.  I have decided to return this 20 gal and wait until I find one with a better hood and lights.   I'll keep an eye out for used or another good sale.  I'll be back for plants in the future!
