Can someone tell me how it is determined which "level" you are at (fry, spawning adult etc) and how you earn "stars."

I believe it is post-count related...
Yup, more post = more stars:
Hatchling * 0
Fry ** 10
Juvenile *** 50
Adult **** 150
Spawning Adult ***** 250
