Hey guys, I'm originally from Ottawa but moved to NYC a few years ago. I had a 90 gallon AGA that was just breathtaking and addictive. i always bought my supplies and fish at Marinescape on Carling. God I miss that place. Is it still open? They were truly passionate about the hobby.
I was a new tank bad. I really am jonesing bad. As everyone is well aware, the space in a Manhattan apartment is significantly smaller than what we Canadians are use to. I dint want to go small, nothing less that 90 gallons. (Id rather a 150 but that ain't happen-in). I had an idea of a tank that was 24" by 24" and 48 tall. I know you are laughing right now but give me a chance. How would you reach and clean the substrate if the tank was that deep, also how could I expect the light to penetrate that deep. ;)
So I'm thinking of having a tank at 24 by 24 by 36". id like to have the overflow in the middle and I would hide the overflow stack with live rock allowing the fish to swim in circles around the rock. I would expect to have the rock hide the complete overflow tower looking like a tall tower of rock from the subrate all the way to the water line.
Am i crazy or is this doable. does anyone know where i can have a custom aquarium like this made. Will anyone even make a tank taller than it is wider?? Even If I have to ship from Canada, id prefer to buy Canadian
I'm sure you could have it built. Look into Miracle Aquariums. They are well known for custom tanks, based in Toronto I think. Would be pretty cool tank for sure.
They may insist on thicker than normal glass, but at 24" x24" base your not going to have an unmanageable amount of pressure, even at 36" depth.
Thank you Mike. Will the tanks bottom being drilled to accomodate a center overflow be weakened or will I need to go with a side overflow which defetes the purpose of my idea?
Are center overflows common no a days, as I have been out of the hobby for a few years and it seems that alot has changed and progressed just nicely
again thanks for your advice in advance.
Well I am not a tank builder by any means, but I would expect drilling the bottom would not have any effect on it's integrity, provided it is done correctly. When it's done properly in a shop there should be no problems.
Back center overflows are common, but not the center column style you've described. Many tanks are drilled on the bottom. My 90g for one.
Now that I think of it.. I think i saw a large custom cube on reefcentral with the overflow you describe.. was a really awesome tank. Do a search for sure. Miracle Aquariums, or many other other builders could do pretty much anything you can imagine, for a price.
Go rimless, with starfire glass, and your dimensions, and you'll have something amazing to behold.
Ive already contacted Miracle. I will use that advice. again thnx. When I get it, I will be in touch. You de man.
best of luck
