Title: Which canister filter?
Post by: Zigot on August 06, 2009, 12:58:58 AM
Hello,

I have a 72G and a pingouin 350 running atm.
I'm looking to get a canister filter as I'm in the making of a semi-planted one with Co2 tank.

Which canister filter do you guys suggest? ( I never had a canister before... )

I've been reading about Fluval, Eheim, Rena and seem like they all have pros and cons.

Thx

Depends on your budget
Eheim #1
Fluval #2
RENA #3
I had a Fluval 405 in my 75g and never had any issuses.

I don't think there's any denying the quality of the Eheim. The downside with them is the cost. I have both a Pro II and a 2217 running on my 90 gallon. Between the 2 I prefer the Pro II, maintenance is much easier. Bottom line though in choosing en Eheim is are you okay with the cost. There are a couple of used ones on the board right now....definitely a cheaper way to get one and since they last for ever being used isn't an issue.

Thank for the replies.

Budget (could) be a problem but it all depend on the reliability, how easy to change/clean media, how much does those media cost because in the long run, it will add to the operating cost.

Is there anything that have all that features?
From most important to least important:
- Durability/reliable.
- Easy to change/clean media ( like Fluval 404?... )
- Cost of media ( could be from another cheaper company or even Home depot, Walmart for equivalent )

Thx

Stay away from the old fluval`s 304 and 404,they have seal leakage problems.
The new series 305,405 much better.

As far as biological filtration goes it's hard to beat Eheim. As previously mentioned, they'll last forever so the cost is somewhat justified by its extremely long life.
Replacement media can be expensive, but don't forget you don't have to buy the brand's own media to replace the old stuff. The filter pads are very expensive for eheims, but you can cut your own for a fraction of the price.

Personally I'd go with an Eheim 2026 Pro II. Rated for 92 gallons (I believe), so it'll definitely do the job. Leave the Penguin 350 on there just for good measure though, hard to have too much filtration.

I have had a fluval 405 for 2 years now and have never had a problem with it, I'm very happy with it.

I just got myself a 2217 classic serie. The quality and performance look very nice.
Thank you for all your replies.

Yeah the 2217 is pretty good, I got 2 used ones and they run perfectly.
