Title: Protein Skimmer and Microbubbles
Post by: Xeno on November 06, 2009, 07:06:19 PM
Hello all,

I'm having problems with my protein skimmer creating a lot of microbubbles, and was wondering if anyone has any temperary or solid solutions.

Tank - 55gallon  (4ft long)
Skimmer - HOB AquaC Remora Pro
Pump - Mag Drive 3 - 350 gph.    1-2" lift to injector.

I've removed the foam prefilter on the pump's intake when I first got it.  I've bin running the thing for 1 month now and have trouble controlling the microbubbles vs. the dirty collection cup foam.  Either its too much or not enough.  Sometimes the collection cup fills up too fast, while other times the bubbles barely reach mid spout.

One recent thing I've tried is to add a plastic water bottle on the skimmer's return plate to try to catch the bubbles and force them to the surface, since one of my powerheads is pretty close.  The Skimmer is located on the side of the tank since I didn't have the room to hang it off the back.

The other thing I've tried is to reduce the flow coming into the pump, by adding some electrical tape to the prefilter, and added some few choice holes.  I've even added some Chado to help collect some of these bubbles.  Nothing seems to be up to par though.  I have thought about down grading and getting the Rio-800 pump but not sure whether I can work with what I got.

One last thing, the tank is not pre-drilled and there is no sump.  In the future I will have one, but right now I have to deal with what I have.

Any help is much appreciated.   :)

Do you have the black pre-filter box that sits inside the tank, if so try putting some nylon window screen at the bottom of the return section (right side) of the box where the water flows out. You can cut a piece of eggcrate to fit the dimensions of the box and wrap the screen around it and push it to the bottom of the return area.
