Title: Noises reduction techniques
Post by: Maxthecat on November 19, 2009, 10:28:52 PM
Sup,

I have a BH1000 hob on my tank. Now this skimmer makes a ton of noise. I was wondering if any how you guys knew how to reduce the noise on it? I starting to think about boxing it in

srry, saw this when you first posted... no HOB experience here...  There are a number of HOB'ers on here, they'll chime in after the presentation on salt-stuff 2nite..

I have a 300F and am waiting for suggestions also.  It is not noisy but, I can hear it and that is louder than i wish it to be.

ive had noisy filters..

wrap them up in a towel and duct tape them up. easiest and most soundproof way.

still noisy?  add more towels.

Have a couple kids, you won't hear anything else.

If you don't want your own, you can borrow mine.   ;-)

I made a box out of styro insulation. It's the kind you buy at HD with the edges notched to fit together. The same principle could be used on an HOB I suppose.

I had a lot of gurgling noise that was coming out of my downspout (not sure what to call it) the tube you turn to open/close the air flow.

I took a 90' elbow piece of PVC or ABS of the same diameter so it would sit on top of the tube and not fall down. Then I covered the other end in duct tape and make a small hole about 5cm wide.

Basically acts as a silencer and worked really well to reduce the bubbling or gurgling noise when my skimmer was not working optimally.  After a while I got it set up adn working I didn't need it anymore.

Cool ideas, hate kids though. I reduced the sound by replacing the impeller shaft. Turns out it was defective.
