Hey,
I went down to the new Lowes in Orleans yesterday. They have a nice plumbing section. I found what looks like PVC pipe various sizes (1.5" and 2") but it is marked as gas vent pipe. Does anyone know how this differs from water pipe and is it aquarium safe? It is schedule 40. Thanks
People seem to be using it.

Thanks Focusfin but I do not see how your link helps. Maybe I missed something.
If you are looking at the schedule 40 part, that just specifies the dimensions and wall thickness. I have seen central vac pvc pipe at home depot with really thin walls (so not schedule 40). It wouldn't hold up to much pressure.
From what i can tell, the gas vent pipe is rated for high temperature gases (65oC and 90oC) but I can't tell if it contains any harmful chemicals.
The Lowes also has a full selection of 1" white sch 40 pipe and fittings.
Brain freeze, I thought you were asking if schedule 40 pvc was aquarium safe :P
Is it the S636 pipe? (normally white)
We use this pipe for combustion air from your furnace, i know there is something different with this pipe than your regular PVC. it was updated in the code a couple years back that the PVC cracks and decays from the condensation of Flue gasses, so they changed to this S636 stuff. i wouldn't use it unless you find a post of somebody using it with no problems. stick with the regular CPVP/PVC pipe.
it could also be gvs65 which is gas venting pipe which is used on boilers etc...im sure its safe but i wouldnt test it and would just stick to pvc or abs...
not trying to steal this thread, but does anyone know how you could test this pipe? perhaps put it in some water and watch the Ph and phosphates?

What is it about this pipe that makes you want to use it specifically.
its not me that wants to use it. and if i had a use for pipe ATM this pipe would be free to me ;). that was just a question that killed that cat, thats all.
Then just get all you can, and some cement , you can make a neat Didgeridoo out of it.
I was interested just for the convenience. I picked up some of the 3/4" and 1" pipe which will work for the supply lines for me. I needed something larger for the return to the sump (multiple tanks sharing the one pipe). I found a couple plumbing stores to get the 2" pipe but they are only open when I am at work. Lowes is open better hours.
