I got a free 30 gal tank for my 3 goldfish but no stand and making my own is out of the question. Does anyone have any ideas on cheaper stands than ones that can be purchased at Big Al's, Nature, etc ? I don't want a metal stand and all the wood ones I've seen are $180 - 200 + tax. I'll probably keep it bare bottom bc they r so messy and easier to keep clean. If I calculated correctly the tank should weigh about 300 lbs without any substrate. Thanks in advance. Cheryl
I use a black TV stand with two shelves and two glass doors... It will be available in a few weeks.
Yard sales are a great place to pick up a dresser, small desk and other items that would hold your 30 gallon easily and not to mention really cheap. Other option is IKEA...
mmm Ikea. :)
I don't want to be a killjoy, but just remember to factor in the weight of the filled tank.
30 gallons of water weigh about 250 lbs! http://www.onlineconversion.com/waterweight.htm (http://www.onlineconversion.com/waterweight.htm)
And even if there are still just 25 gallons in there, that's almost 210 pounds, plus the weight of the tank, the substrate, etc.
I remember looking into Ikea stuff and finding nothing rated high enough to support my 20 gallon tank, so I just ended up buying a stand from the classified, so you may want to try there.
Good luck! :)

Dorrie you're certainly not being a killjoy. i know the tank will weigh 300 + lbs. i have an old dresser that's big enough but i know the tank would fall right through it. i was made aware of an ad by another member and am checking into it. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
I know yard sales and IKEA, but the salvation Army could be a good spot. Because of the weight factor, you might have re-enforce the stand; if you have some barbell weights to try before putting the tank, it would be a good test.
