Hi,
The last get together was such a success that it was decided to plan regular get togethers every couple of months.
The next one is on March 18th, 2012 from 1p.m. until the end... at my place which is:
454 Edison Ave
Ottawa, ON
K1A 1T9
tel: 613-695-3598
It's in Westboro near Newport Pizza on Churchill. Edison is parallel to Churchill, turn on Ravenhill and we're the 2nd house on Edison Ave.
If I could get a RSVPs for those planning on attending and what you'll be bringing, that would be great!
Also, is there anyone that would like to present their tanks and share lessons learned? I'd love to have a show and tell...even if it's just pictures...it would be easy to view them on TV...we've got the equipment.
Thanks!
Sylvie
I'm going to get the ball rolling.
I'm in and will bring a fruit tray.
:)
Count me in too Sylvie. I know your area well. I grew up on Winona Ave. a couple of blocks from your place. I will be bringing a Veggy tray and dip. ;)
Well if Eric & Monty is going so am i :D - i`ll decide later what i`m bringing.
Errol
I would like to join in as well
Me too.
I'm bringing NAMETAGS!
And something to eat. But I'll decide that in March. :)
I am going to attend, too, and I'm looking forward to it. I'll decide closer to the date what to bring. I can bake something :)
It's still to early to commit for me, but the date is marked down.
I can bring a sixpack or two. Or some grape juice if that suits everyone better. :)
Count me in.
I will bring a Mexican dip and corn chips.

I got an idea for you Rah, some Needle Leaf Fern for your PA friends :)
I plan on making it, but like others, it is too early for me to 100% confirm. Food is TBD.

Hey everyone,
I've got some java moss that needs trimming...does anyone want some. There will probably be some water sprite - fast growing stem plant. Hornwort too. As you can see, these are beginner plants and they grow fast. Low light seem to be fine...I don't even put any ferts in my small tank and they are still OK.
Let as I'll put some aside...
Sylvie
I noticed Robert has pledged to do a live demo on the application of the vinyl back ground ( thanks Robert), so if anyone has an empty tank that would like to have this application on please indicate here with dimensions, preferably a smaller tank , i will supply the vinyl.
Errol
I'm in and I like others don't know what I will bring yet ;D

Would a 2.5gal be too small? That's all I've got that's empty!
I would love to join the plant party, so just let me know.
I can also bring a 6 pack..what's a good choice? Corona, coors?
And I might bring something baked...I'll see closer to the date.

I would love some more moss. I got rid of a ton awhile back and now find myself in need again (of course). lol. Looking forward to the plant meeting! :)

Well the auction is over & tons of planted associated items were snapped up, so let`s get together & share tips, experiences, ask questions, have a hands on tutorial on applying Vinyl as a background & some pictorial show & tell tank builds etc, I know PM is willing to show & tell his tank, how about
youThen there is always the food & beverage aspect , what are you bringing? ;)
Errol
I am looking forward to it. I will bring some kind of homemade appetizer/finger food type thing.
Looking forward to it! Not too far away now!
I'm going to bring my 2.5 gal for the demo, maybe some muffins & probably something else.
Although I don't use Co2, I would love to share my successes with the methods I use :)
If I get a chance to, I will print out some pics of my tanks to share as well.
Looking forward to it too!! :D
What time were people thinking of holding it at? I tried to book it off work and they said no so I won't be free till after 4

not a problem, I can put a bunch aside for you...won't be enormous as someone else had asked for some but should be enough for both.

What could I bring?

I don`t think the plantanolics would object ;)
I`m bringing some chowmein & i`m hoping jetstream will make his signature fried rice if he is coming hmmm ;) can you confirm jetstream.
Errol
I will try to think of something to compliment those things! Sounds so yummy :)
I can finally confirm that I can make it ;D.
As Errol suggested, I can do a slide show on my tank(s). What format can I bring the pics in? (hopefully just a usb drive with jpg pics on it). I would classify myself as "intermediate" in the planted tank hobby now, so I can share some tips and tricks that our guru friends may have long forgotten ;)
As for food, I don't know yet.

SWEET! Looking forward to it! On a side note, anyone also bringing plants? I know the Auction wasn't too long ago but perhaps some plants for sale/swap at the meeting would be awesome! I liked the variety we had last time!

I'm looking for Echinodorus tenellus so if anyone has some, I'm first in line :-)
Maybe if people are looking for particular things, they could post a request such as the one Eric has posted above.

X2
I'll be honest :p I don't know what I am looking for exactly but when I see it I'll want it! :p I think it'll be cool to bring trimmings to sell and swapping can be done if one already knows what one wants. Otherwise they could still be sold. Why compost perfectly fine plants? :) I guess the concern is packaging/bringing plants only to find no one wants it? If so I liked how we did it the other time where the user posts what he/she has available and what is being brought for sure and what will be brought only upon a PM being sent.
At the end of the day, it'll be a little bit of a trading session where we'll either acquire new plants that we've been eyeing for a while but not found, or never knew existed or help supply others with goodies :) I missed the auction but I remember being excited and making plans to buy plants that I saw on the list that I never knew were in these neck of the woods so I think if we could capture that either at the meeting (bring what you have and Surprise) or here (make a short listing of what you have available to bring).
On a separate note, Errol if you have some Erio. S. and L. Arcuata trimmings, I'd love some. Thanks . Thats all i had to say ;p
Sorry Rah , not much in the way of plants this time, the Giant auction coupled with sending some off to the city (TO), i`m down to bare bones ;)
I do have a Fluval co2 atomizer & one from AI i will bring if anyone is interested & a co2 rig, since this is not the proper board to discuss sales etc, i would suggest we stick to what we are looking for & what we are bringing to the PA gathering :D
Errol
Nooo.. :-[ Soon enough though so let me know when you have some :p

I concur. No discussions on sales etc. but i don't see why we can't post plant related items as part of the list of things that one could potentially bring if PM'ed ;) Just don't list your Pec Deck cuz you're postponing your new-years resolution to next year or your kid because you thought it was a good idea at that time, and we'll be good no? ;D

I have basic plants leftovers...water sprite, bacopa canadiana, hornwort, and Java moss but this has already been promised to a couple of people.
I've also got some juvi guppies to give away, both female and male...most are black in colour, some with black and orange tail, some are green cobras. We can settle once you see them but my prized ones are not for grabs...lol...the young ones would be good for little ones watching them grow or as feeder fish I guess.
As for the presentation, I'm investigating the possibilities to make a USB stick work...noticed that my TV upstairs doesn't have the plug but a HDMI and the white, red, and yellow round plugs that don't necessarily plug into a laptop...stay tuned!
Can't wait...it's in less than 2 days now!
I would be interested in a few of the guppies for my grand daughter's tank :)
I`m bringing a bit of Blyxa Japonica & a very small bit of Glosso.
So who else would be coming, just post here so the host is aware how much people she can expect, all that is required is a love for planted tanks & of course a desire to share experiences.
Regards

Just poking my nose in here. Not sure what vintage and type of equipment you're using, but most newer laptops and flat-screen TVs have an HDMI port. Just connect the two units, plug the stick into an available USB port on the laptop, and you should be good to go, no?? Really, none of my business, just being nosy. I know it would be a snap to do with the stuff I've got, and it's nothing special.

That's OK, as I just had to look at both the TV and my laptop to discover that they both have the HDMI connection. We're all set to go as I have an extra HDMI cable to use.
I will be coming :)
We will come. :)
I am there too! I'll bring some Limnophilia Sessiliflora (Asian Ambulia) and maybe some really small trimmings of Blyxia as well!
You can put me down. I think I got the hubby to take care of the kids ;D
I'll be there.
Count me in. Not sure what to bring though - any gaps? Drinks? Dessert? Something green? :)

With pleasure! How many were you thinking of? and male or female? As they won't do well in a bag for so long, I'll put them in a breeding tank to make it easy when the time comes for you to bring them home.
Just a few, a couple of each, I guess. I am not sure of what the ratio should be, I guess more females to males, so the males don't harass one poor female too much. Anyway, just a few :)
I also wanted to mention that I am bring bacon and mushroom quiche squares.
Unfortunately im stuck with a shift all day tomorrow at work and won't be able to attend :(

Fruits always go good or crackers and cheese...I've got grapes and I saw strawberries on sale.
I'll have honey and garlic meatballs to complete Errol's dish. I've got typical munchies and maybe some type of cake desert...my husband mentioned making something tonight and I'm not going to stop him! lol
But if you have the wine already, bring it on!

Hi Errol, I've been following this post very closely and it seems that most of the first crowd will be there with a few additionals...I'm estimating around 15 people or so. That's totally fine since people will be bringing something - food or otherwise! We should be good. Oh and i wanted to mention that I have a hot buffet serving tray with 3 compartments so we have means of keeping food hot...I'll be using the crockpot for the honey and garlic meatballs.
See you tomorrow everyone

I think my hubby is coming along as well..not sure yet.
See you tomorrow!
If it wasn't my dad's 86th I'd be there in a heartbeat, sounds like a great get together. Food, friends and plants. You can't ask for much more :).
My kids took turns puking over March Break. They stop, it gets really, really nice out, and obviously now it's my turn. :'(
Putting myself in the quarantine tank, so I don't get the rest of you fishies sick.
Have fun, and i'll catch you next time.
Sorry all I was not able to make it. My wife decided to celebrate my son's birthday party this afternoon and evening. Next time.

Yes, it was a great time. Thank you, Sylvie & James for opening your beautiful home to us.
Great meet-up :) Thanks Sylvie for having us and excellent presentations by Peter , Winnie and Rob! Cant wait for the road trip!
Awesome get together again, huge success thanks to you guys!
Thanks everyone for coming, it was wonderful to have you all...there's enough food left over for another get together...and wine! lol
Loved the presentation, and demo for the vinyl installation. I also much appreciated your diagnostics of my tank. I will make the suggested changes and report back the results.
Once summer is in full swing, we'll do a BBQ and enjoy the outdoors!
Until next time!

And a few more
Yes, I would also like to thank Sylvie and her husband for hosting, Robert, Winnie and Peter for their presentations. Everything was terrific.
Errol, I think you asked for the URL for Aquatic Gardener? It's as follows:

Let me add my thanks, too! Some familiar faces for me and some new ones, lots of great info and friendly folks.
Thanks to Peter, Robert and Winnie for sharing their experience. Thanks to Sylvie and James for hosting in their lovely home.
I stuck some green stuff in my tanks a year or so ago, and can't believe Peter's tank after about 6 months.
I have a loooong way to go, but I am totally encouraged! I am going to turn my green mess into something that is more peaceful than chaotic. :D Thanks for the inspiration folks - I'm looking forward to learning from you.

Cant wait for the road trip!
There is a problem with the road trip that we spoke of at the meeting: I looked in the 'discount' at Discount and (a) they have no 7 passenger vehicles at that time, and (b) they are closed on Friday and only open 'till 11:30 AM the Saturday which adds at least a full day and possibly two full days for a trip at that time (we spoke of Easter weekend, April 6 and 7). I checked Budget and Enterprise and they are either also closed or showing no vehicles (of any size) available for the 5, 6, 7 of April.
I looked at Discount the following weekend and there are still no 7 passenger vehicles available. Budget and Enterprise (on the following weekend) have vehicles but the cost becomes too steep for my Scottish blood. We are looking at about $55 each (rental, mileage costs over 400 km, and taxes in, no insurance included). It wouldn't cost me twice that in gas only in my own vehicle. So, if we have a minimum of 3 going, the costs would be approximately half ($90 for gas divided three ways).
Any comments? Perhaps we should have a show of virtual hands as to who is committed to go: (a) on Easter weekend, (Apr 6, 7) or (b) on the weekend following (Apr 13, 14); and thirdly, who would still be interested if we caravaned with 2 vehicles. G

Works for me.
I'm going to have to back out of the Easter week-end and following week-ends. I've got family commitments up the wazoo and March/April will be tough for me.
What's the destination for this road trip?
Toronto region.
How about the weekend of the 15 Th, if persons are interested in checking out the DRAS event - caravaning is a good option.

The DRAS aquariama is on a Sunday. I'm interested but this would mean a very frenetic down and back if we go on Saturday and Sunday. Or, is a two day trip worth it? Down Friday and back Sunday, late?
I wonder what happened to that trip? If anyone is interested, we can just take a day trip down anywhoo . Doesn't even have to be this weekend. Or even a day trip to MTL could be good for now :) I'd pitch in for gas and provide geeky company at the very least :D
It looks like an overnight trip is going to be tough for me to pull off. A 1 day return trip would be better for me.
What about the SAM auction?
