Looking very nice. I love those Starfire tanks.
Can not wait to see the progress of this tank.
Dan
Very nice!
Pretty smart to do the moss and anubias without water. I'll remember that for next time.
Looking forward to seeing this develop!
Way to go Eric, congrats, love the stand too, you should have built 2 ;D

Two? One for you too? Trust me, it's ok, hence the reason why I opted to paint it black - so the details wouldn't show as much. I had a look at AI's 25 gal stand and they were asking $130 but I wasn't too impressed with the strength of that stand, only the outside finish looks good.

That was the thinking but dreaded the thought of stripping the tank down, was going to paint mine like peekay did to a similar stand but have decided to skin mine & stain it black.
Very nice split substrate. I was going to do that on my 10 gal, had everything ready, but chickened out in the end. I move stuff around too much, they would have mixed.
Kudos to you on having a planned layout before you started. :)

Black stain is very nice with the black background it really makes the colours of the plants and fish pop out.

With aquasoil you really can't be digging stuff up too much because disturbing the substrate releases organic matter and it clouds up the water. This is why I did all the planting with a couple of inches of water only, and with tweezers. From personal experience, some aquascapes just need time to develope and patience.

Hey Eric, is that the AI DC CO2 regulator you're using?
If not, can you give us a bit more details on your CO2 rig?
Yeah, that's a DC regulator from AI. I had them bring it when they were here in January. Personally I would've went with the blue regulator instead of the fuschia pink, but what the heck. So far so good.

LOL Fushia is the new blue anyways ;)
How do you like it so far? The price is right on the unit so if it performs, its a good deal.

To be honest, I was a bit skeptical at first because of the price, and the fact that it's made in China, but so far it's been excellent. The control dial is very precise. I would recommend getting the co2 cylinder from another source though, but the fact that it's supposed to be a dual stage regulator, with needle valve, bubble counter and solenoid (with a built-in check valve-but I still use a $2 check valve to be sure) it's actually a good deal.

Hey Eric, did you mean 2 gauge?, because that regulator is not a 2 stage.
Errol
Yes, single stage but dual gauge. Which means I have to be careful when the end of tank dump occurs.
Day 7 update...some noticeable growth in the stem plants.

Thanks guys. Enrico; yes, it's a cheap plastic $2 valve, but I've got a top-notch brass check valve on its way in the mail as we speak.
Where did you find the brass valve?

Regarding the check valve - i have used excluvisley the clippard brass & Red sea plastic for the last 6 yrs or so to date i had one failure & that was the clippard brass valve, the red sea plastic valve is a work horse.

This is very true. The jury is out on the use of plastic vs brass, certainly the comments you'll find on the internet are mixed. I'm not promoting the use of brass over plastic for sure. But I wonder if the use of a DIY CO2 yeast system will degrade the plastic valve sooner than the brass or vice versa. Any thoughts Errol? Especially considering the residue that is produced with the typical diy system.

Hi Eric, when i was doing the sugar & yeast thing my first check valve was the hagen check valve the residue killed it in 3 months, then BigDaddy/ a member, told me about the Red Sea
http://www.bigalspets.ca/Red-Sea-Check-Valve/dp/B0061SIH00
Never had one fail then or to this day with pressurized & Diy.
I also use the clippards but cost is significantly higher.

I've had the same experience with the diy thing, it just wrecks everything (check valves, plastic in general, filters etc). Maybe the pressurized co2 system won't be as rough on the cheaper valves than the diy is. But just to be sure, I went with the brass. Next time I'm at the LFS I'll pick up a red sea valve or two, it never hurts to have extras kickin' round.

There is one @ the OVAS giant auction tomorrow(48 gallon), even comes with ADA soil, Rocks, Driftwood & T5 HO lighting with moon lights.
Small update, been dealing with more algae, diatoms and brown algae due to the new setup, ammonia and having to switch to a new co2 regulator...but hopefully I'm on the right track now.

Very, very nice!! Clean and crisp, and pretty to boot!
I like how you put another one of those "you know, that one" plants in front of the driftwood on the right. I think it looks better with it there.
Nice work. :)
Thanks chubs and peekay. The grass-like plant is sagittaria subulata. I've had this stuff growing for years in my other tanks, but never seen it grow so tall as it has with pressurized co2. I'm actually wanting something red to put in there, but something with finer, smaller leaves to not take away from the scale...any suggestions for red plants?

Thanks daworldisblack, the plant on the right rear side of the tank is actually Rotala wallichii but you wouldn't be able to tell. For some reason it has gone green and somewhat spindly, not sick, just not red and bushy. My pH is somewhere between 6.2-6.4 and virtually no KH, or 0.5ppm. I heard water hardness can affect the plant's red colouration, but I'm kind of stumped with this one.

I have never experienced any KH/colour issues as far as i can tell, i wll check my KH & repost, but i don`t mess with it, from the tap to the tank Ph 5.75, i should try some wallichi & see.
I would suggest you try some Ludwigia glandulosa for your red plant & see how that grows.

It's not small leaved, and I'm not sure about the scale in your 25, but some red lotus leaves planted behind the wood and hovering in front of the wall of rotala would be cool.
Where are you picturing the red being placed?

I dont know the requirements of it actually. Just threw it out there as i thought it fit the bill :) I need to look it up as I was looking to use that plant too. As for alternatives, Lugwigia Arcuata or Brevipes and Mermaid Weed seem cool too!
I was looking at your original plant list, and wondered if you added the crypt that you were thinking of using. That would add a bit of colour.

Sorry Eric , missed the small leaf requirement, so out goes the ludwigia glandulosa :), like Rah suggested the Brvipes or arcuata.
Errol
Touchofsky - It's funny you mention the bronze crypt wendtii because I was just thinking about taking some out of my 75g and 125g to transplant, I think I'll be moving some plants around this week.
Errol, the low KH is just something I threw in there to say that my water is in fact soft (pH 6.4) I read somewhere that rotala wallichii is a notorious soft water loving plant and seems to show its best red colouration in low alkalinity. This is really a mystery for me since I haven't kept many red plants in the past, with the exception of ludwigia repens, and I went through something similar with that. I know Tom Barr talked briefly in the recent podcast about not doing anything special in his tanks to obtain the red colours, so I'm maybe leaning towards Fe as being a possible culprit. I do dose flourish comprehensive 3 times a week, so I think I'm going to begin also dosing equilibrium to be sure. Between those two ferts I'm sure I'll "hit the nail on the head".
I like the suggestions of ludwigia arcuata, brevipes and p. palustris, thanks Rah and peekay!
If you just want to replace the sagittaria subulata with something else, try Helanthium tenellum (previously know as Echinodorus tenellus). It can look very different depending on your conditions, and has a very nice reddish color under high light.
As for red, I find it helps to keep the nitrates low, and assure calcium is available. I find dosing Calcium Nitrate gives good results. The rest is light and CO2. I never found the KH being a problem, unless the bio-load is high, or a water change a long time ago. Low KH is good, it assures low pH, and that tends to be better for the nutrient uptake of plants.

As for red - I dose equilibrium and flourish comprehensive, both have cacium, and there's certainly enough CO2. Maybe my light is not intense enough. Thanks for the tip.
Update, added some glossostigma elatinoides, thanks to Errol, and some red crypts wendtii and undulata. But as you notice the glosso has begun to grow vertical, and the crypts are not intensely red, meaning my light is not intense enough... >:(

Thanks Eric, no it's just a sealand fountain pump, pumps about 100gph, and yes, it's to get really good circulation of the co2 and other nutrients. I've had some algae issues because I'm not getting enough circulation and I'm using a soil based substrate - ADA aquasoil.

Errol, yeah the glosso height and lack of red colours are telling me it's not enough. I have 6 bulbs x 14w which works out to 3.3wpg but I think it's not enough because they're regular T5s not HO. Here's what I've been looking at getting, let me know what you think...http://www.jlaquatics.com/product/sl-t5nw2404/Sunlight+Supply+New+Wave+4+Bulb+T5+Fixture+%2824+Inch%2C+4x24W%29.html (http://www.jlaquatics.com/product/sl-t5nw2404/Sunlight+Supply+New+Wave+4+Bulb+T5+Fixture+%2824+Inch%2C+4x24W%29.html)
Looking really nice.
Lower light intensity isn't a bad thing here. Yes , glosso isn't as dense, but give it a few more weeks and it fill in as well. Unless you want to see red, there is no need to change.
The light should be fine.Have you checked with Ray`s Aquatic, i think he can get those.
Errol
About six weeks ago I planted some glosso up front to help farm it before using it in my new 7g setup...

And if I was wondering if my light was intense enough, this picture should answer that question, the glosso has grown half way up the meet the lights.

Wawaweeewa! WOAH that is incredible lol
A couple of changes since the explosion of glossostigma, I decided to incorporate some really nice rocks I was able to come across and add some nano sized interesting creatures - 7 chili rasboras and 10 cherry shrimp. So far so good.

Jealous.... Very jealous... I need to get mine up and running with a little more pizzaz.
Lol.. andrew.. pizzaz = 125Gal :p Get it up now! Haha.. Nice one Eric! I am envious of your Chilli crew! They must be tiny! Good thing you got some plant cover up top too. Mine have jumped since I rescaped and am down a few -_-" Got a top on it now but plant cover works! Neat scape too!
Lovely, Eric.
I admire how you've handled scale in a smallish tank.
Thanks Andrew, Rah and peekay. Rah, I'm hoping la niche gets more chilis in their next shipment. At first I thought I had bought all females becaue their colours were a bit dull, but within two weeks they began to really brighten up (the males), awesome fish!

Lets see some close up shots! How much were they? I might beef up my group as well. Now i just see 3 and I don't see me putting any other species in there - the chilli's are perfect!

The rocks look great. If I may ask, what was the source?

Yeah, I think they look like the popular ryuoh stone used in nature aquariums. BA's in Kanata just got a shipment in last weekend, and I bought some extras for my 7g nano. Can't remember what they've labeled them as.

I wish. These fish move like crazy and my camera sucks. I've got the chilis in there with some lemon tetra fry, but I think I'm gonna have to move the tetras soon, they'll start to out complete the chilis for food. I'd like to keep it a single species tank.
Just a quick update on this setup. Got bored and decided to redo the setup after finding some nice seiryu stones with lots of character. I'm going with the dry start method, with Hemianthus micranthemoides, glossostima elatenoides and very little Hemianthus callitrichoides. Please ignore the unfinished basement background.

Loving it, I have gone with a similar scape in my 15 gallon but with 5 rocks, keep us posted as it develops.

Looking good Eric, I will agree with Rah about some foreground plants, perhaps Staurogyne repens carpet?
Thanks guys! I just ended up pulling out all the glosso from the front right, which is why there's a bare patch. And the HC is not growing as quick as I'd like it. I'll keep an eye out for staurogyne.

Thanks Errol! And I'll bring the HM, Greg says he has no room in his tanks for more plants, so it's all yours.
