Title: "Shrimps Killed by Mail Ordered Plants"
Post by: wolfiewill on February 26, 2012, 11:26:42 PM
Hey, I got the shock of my planted-tank-geek life when I read this article. For anyone who mail orders plants - this is a must read!

Ugh. This just happened to my shrimp tank... I still have some alive but they are hiding at the very too of the aquarium and appear to be very lost. Thank you for posting this as it was incredibly informative.

I would do some water changes to save the others still alive. But if you quarantine your plants, like you do your fish, any residual chemicals would be gone in time.

That's the plan when I get home from class. I saw on the link that someone put the shrimp in brand new water and they rebounded. I'll try that I think. But definitely going to quarantine the plant and will do so from now on.

Just confirmed with the wife that I have a a number of dead shrimp as well (added the same HC Cuba as bettabreeder)  >:(

Got her to do a water change, which I hope will work until I get home.

I have had hitchhikers on plants before, so I inspect them carefully, but never a pesticide.

Major PITA if a plant wipes out a colony!!!!

Well the shrimp apocalypse was not as bad as I thought it would be.  Only a few were dead.

Since I planted the HC almost stem by stem, and rinsed it before hand, maybe I lucked out.   I just did a big water change, and will continue to do so for the next few days.  Hopefully this will do the trick.

Thank goodness this was not my main tank.

Yet another reason to try to buy local...like at Sunday's Giant Auction :)

I got some HC from a member at one of the mini auctions and I'm positive he didn't dose them with heavy chemical :)

You never know what you'll find!

I also quarantine my plants.  If they're a tough species, I put them in an Ikea jar in the window.  If they're not, I have a few tanks in the basement that I use for QT or sick tanks.
