Hey! I was also asking the same thing at the last OVAS meeting. lol I so enjoyed the last one, loved the demoes. Anyone willing to do a show and tell, doesn't matter about the latin names of plants...all i want to know is what are you doing different, lessons learned...It's also a way to ask questions...let's say you've tried to build a tank for a certain look and it didn't pan out...well you can do a show about it and get some feedback. LoL...For those who weren't there last time, we tried to do some trouble shooting for my larger tank...I'm due for more pictures after implementing some of the advice.

Anyway, my place is always up for hosting...we can do a BBQ...or have it mostly outside instead of inside. But I don't want to be greedy, so I'll go wherever and whenever.

Ok so which evening would be best? I say evening because my weekend are booked and it will August! So how is a Thursday sound. Either the 21 or 28? Let me know if it works for you. If so who is volunteering to do a talk or demo?
Title: Re: Plantaholics Anonymous Part |||

Hey plantaholics...please let me know if Thursday the 21 or 28th is good for you. If not, please feel free to suggest another evening...I would offer a weekend timeframe but I'm booked until mid August...no kidding.

A BBQ it is! the backyard is ready! We will supply the meat and a couple of salads - potato and a coleslaw. We have pop but feel free to byob and munchies. Oh yeah, let me know if anyone is vegetarian so that we can make sure you eat too!

Thanks,
Sylvie

Things have changed for me and there would be a possibility on the Canada Long weekend!...Is Friday night considered a weekday night? If that weekend is not good then I'm afraid it will end up being in September...no kidding as my daughter is getting married and a good number of my family will be staying over all of August. Lot's of prep work to do too!

If you want to have a get together, someone else might have to host.

Thanks,
Sylvie

Maybe we should hold off until late August, since the lack of interest is  evident in this thread.

Post by: sylros on June 18, 2012, 08:02:22 PM
I don't think it's interest, it's more availability...everyone's busy with summer stuff, sports, cottages and visitors.

it's OK to postpone, August/September can still be very nice to have a BBQ. Also, if someone can host, then maybe they'll have more free time that I at the moment and it might still be possible.

What do you all think plantaholics, although it would be nice to get together, should we postpone to end of summer?

Thanks,
Sylvie

Summer is always a hard time to arrange things, because people are so busy with holidays and such.  I am willing to host, but I think the attendance would be small because of the drive out here.

Yeap Summer does seem like a busy time for everyone with too many things going on. I wouldn't mind waiting till later in the summer as well. Weekdays and evenings are busy busy busy and weekends are just as crazy :)

Same here, summertime is tough.
I'd vote to move it til end of summer or resume in September.

It seems like resuming in Sept. is the most popular choice.

Maybe instead of a meeting we should just organize a shopping trip?  I'm dying to get outta town to do some fish shopping.  If everyone wants to talk plants for an hour or so, that's what the lunch stop is for! :)

What?  She doesn't want to go to Toronto crammed in a car with a bunch of fish geeks?! ;D

Well, this weekend is too short notice for hubby and the following weekend is just before christmas.  Wow...that came up fast!! ::)  I suppose that would work but I thought it would be too close to the holidays for everyone else.

Who else is interested?
Title: Re: Plantaholics Anonymous Part |||
Post by: sylros on December 04, 2012, 10:43:57 PM
I'm interested of course but am still busy with this kitchen plus on the 15th, I am babysitting my little grandson then on Sunday, we'll be spending time to get ready for Xmas.

My decorations are not even up yet, this weekend partially.

I'm not that fond of travelling long distances during this time of year because of the possible storms. How about whoever is around during the holidays, lets get together. For me the week in between will be pretty relaxed since all the preparations have been taken care of before Xmas. Plus there's only 3 days of work for me.

Who around during that time? I can offer my place as it's pretty central. I actually would have a complete tank to setup, we could all work on it! lol...just kidding! But am looking for plants.

What are some of the plant topic areas that you would like to talk about, once we have an idea...whoever has the info and is willing to do a demo, then we're set. We're setup too for showing your photos of your tank, and if you wanted to troubleshoot some plant problems, perhaps we can help.

What are your thoughts?

lol.. nothing formal.. attendees or you can volunteer to present on something. Maybe someone has a journal on a set up of their's that they want to share or maybe some want to learn about something (we learnt how to apply vinyl the last time). So maybe we'll hear from some peeps here. Pretty easy going events usually.

Hopefully I'll be there as well.  It will depend on how quickly the tot goes for a nap after lunch.  I'll bring some vals and a few clippings of a plant that I forgot the name of.  Stem plant, light green leaves with pink veins.

I would also like some of the bolbitis if there's enough to go around.

Your signature says "MTS sufferer". Does it mean you have more MTSes that you really need? If so,I can take as many as you can give to me ... Not really plant related, but if you are willing to catch some for tomorrow, I'd gladly take them...

i am interested, my withdrawal systems are worse as I missed the last one!

So far, weekends seem to be working best but it's not necessary. As for dates, just remember that the next OVAS meeting is on April 29th, and then there's Easter...perhaps close to the mid-April? 13 or 20th.

Just some thoughts.

Well, even if it's Easter weekend, what's wrong with meeting on Saturday for a couple hours? You can spend all day Sunday with your families :)

Well some of us have families that live far away...I shall be away during that weekend. Hence the reason for April 13th but it could be the week before that.

But you're the host so it's up to you...

After talking to some folks at the auction today, it looks like the 13th is a better date. So, how's Saturday, April 13 sound for everyone?

Post here if that works or not. I was thinking about meeting at around 2 pm at my place in Barrhaven...

I'm in. I'm still high from yesterday, but can't seem to get enough. Is there a come-down from this I should know about???? Maybe detox is warranted.

I am going to book the afternoon to go. Count me in!

Was there anything in particular that wanted to talk about? For me it's more troubleshooting, because I've just started using CO2, I broke down afterall. Just couldn't keep up with the fertilizing in my low tech tank.

Plus I am in search of dry ferts to make it more cost effective. I also need to change my regimen now that i have CO2. So I will very much welcome a discussion around that.

I've got 2 tanks that I am working on...the one that I won at the Auction and another that I had started but was just missing the plants. Of course, now this is going to be re-aquascaped after the awesome demo from Jason Baliban. I should have photos of the progress whatever it will be at that stage.

But I also want to hear about you tials and tribulations.

Cool, so far the following people have confirmed:

exv152
wolfiewill
daworldisblack
fischkopp
sylros
charlie
+me :)

So, basically I'll show my 225 gal planted setup with the sump in the basement. It's a fairly high-tech tank with circulation pump, continuous drip water change system, UV sterilization, 3x dosing pump for ferts, high-light, CO2 injected. I'm still trying to strike the balance to keep the algae at bay and keep the plants flourish. I'm sure it's going to be an interesting discussion. :)

I also have 55 gal planted tank that has it's own share of problems :) but different from my main tank.

As last time, we could bring some plants for trade if anyone is interested. I can give pail-sized loads of najas grass that filled my 33 gal shrimp/platy breeding tank.

I'll get some food/drinks too, so we have ourselves entertained even more :)

Here is an idea. Why don't you guys (and gals) bring water samples from your planted tanks. And we can do some comparative water analysis to compare what each tank has. I would definitely love to know where I stand in relation to others with my fertilizer dosing...

My plants are growing but not properly.  I would also love to pick up any advice I can.

Feel free. If you have interesting plants, by all means :) I know I'm looking for more foreground plants. Like hairgrass and the like. I ruined the batch I got from you last time. It succumbed to algae... :)

I'm sure some of the people who are coming could use some plant variety as well. I can share some cuttings too. It's just it would be bad if you bring a common plant and nobody wants it :) Feels awkward. That's why I said let people know what you can bring to see if there is interest, so you don't have to bring it back home or just throw away. That'd be a shame...

So, pworthing, you are welcome to join. Unfortunately it looks like fischkopp will not be able to make it. :(

Oh, one more thing, if you have MTS (Malaysian trumpet snails), bring as many as you can. My tank is ready for them (and so are my loaches). I'm trying to establish the population of MTS in my tank, but it looks like my two clown loaches (and the yoyo) get them pretty quickly. So, if you have them and think they are pests, catch as many as you can and bring them over!

Title: Re: Plantaholics Anonymous Part |||

Hi guys,

I've got some hygrophilia polysperma, here's a picture: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hygrophila_polysperma.JPG

This plant does well in all kind of condition, the more light the redder it gets. It's more of a background plant because it can grow as tall as you let it. Great beginner plant, it doesn't need CO2 but if it does, it just gets bushier and bigger leaves.

Anyone want to try them?

I'll take xmas moss, or singapour moss, anubia coffeelia...and any red plant. Asking for a lot hein? Sorry, it's because I am in the middle of building some tanks and the stores don't have any plants that I'm looking for. I will trade later on 'cause I plan to  grow the ones that are hard to get.

I'll take that SAE off your hands, I've got one that is lonely.

What shall we bring as of food or drink? I can't wait!

See you all tomorrow afternoon...rain or shine!

One more thing, I have some equipment I have no use for that I'd be willing to sell/give away. So if you want something, you can have it. I will give a decent price for the stuff :)

- (Broken) Odyssea 48" 4 x 64W light fixture with moonlights. I think one ballast needs to be replaced. And the bulbs are used.

- Odyssea 36" 2 x 96W light fixture with moonlights. Works fine but needs new bulbs and probably replacement of the fan since it gets noisy.

- (New, never used) Jebo 36W UV sterilizier with spare bulb. 220V version. But I can add a 50W 110->220V power adapter.

- 24" light fixture with singe 18" 15W T8 bulb (old)

Thanks everyone for coming. It was a fun event. You did disappoint me a bit in your (lack of) ability to consume the food though. So now I have to put on some extra weight myself :)

To answer the question I've been asked by some people. The dosing pump I'm using is made by Marine Magic from Hong Kong. I bought it off of their eBay store: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Marine-Magic-aquarium-dosing-pump-Triple-/281090947353

A couple days ago I bought a second unit so I can dose Flourish Iron separate from CSM+B and Flourish Excel from the rest of the macros.

Thanks to all of you who make me feel more normal.   Some of the things I think about changing inside the house (tank here, tank there) don't seem so crazy anymore :)

Thanks for the eye opener.   I knew it was past time for a water change.   A lot of fish in there and I will try to do better.   30% last night.

Had a great time!    Learned a lot but still not enough.   Will try to find time to do some reading and dig out the test kits.   Any links to the best starter plant articles are greatly appreciated.
Also, I am going to look a buying some of the large bottles of flourish/excel from angelfins if any more people are interested?  Thanks Alex

If I can get a tank that looks half as good as Alex's tank looks, then I'll be happy to have you over.  Although, I guess I can offer a barbecue/swim once the better weather is here.   Alex, your son is the same age as mine, so that might work out well?  I'm afraid the rest of you will have to put up with kids on a trampoline.

Would also love to try some shrimp in my tank if any of you want to sell some or know the best place to get them  reasonably.

LoL, I might have sent this to the wrong user...here is what I sent:
Here is what Errol had given me early on in my venture into planted tanks. I'm dosing per my tank size, I happen to have all of these ingredients...yes it cost me but I still have some after 1.5yrs...mind you I haven't been dosing every week either.

http://www.seachem.com/support/PlantDoseChart.pdf
Note , Errol suggests skip the Flourish trace & use Flourish comprehensive , also don`t worry with the Flourish iron - the comprehensive will cover the iron.
you don`t need the day 7 products either except for the Prime water treatment or whatever water treatment you are using now...If you do a water change....I'm so low in nutrients that I don't, but I try to do a water change every 3 weeks. This is in a tank that doesn't have CO2.

i will be doing more tests as I've added some phosphates to my tanks. Now I'm curious to see where everything else stands. Who's go info on dry fertz dosing...I'll share what I have found in a different thread but was curious if you had the same info. Found a calculator...

Here's one I use quite often:   http://www.rexgrigg.com/

As for Rex's actual ingredients, I use the KNO3 and KH2PO4 as he suggests (from B&B hydroponics at the corner of Woodward and Courtland here in Ottawa), Seachem Equilibrium for potassium, and Seachem Flourish Comprehensive for iron and micros, and if you use Exel, Metricide is a much more economical source for liquid carbon.

you don`t need the day 7 products either except for the Prime water treatment or whatever water treatment you are using now...If you do a water change....I'm so low in nutrients that I don't, but I try to do a water change every 3 weeks.

The seachem chart is pretty good, if you are dosing a small tank, it can get expensive for larger tanks & multiple tanks. in which case the EI system works great for growing plants & uses the dry salts from Hydroponics stores.

Thanks everyone for the great info on Saturday and in this thread.

Alex a huge thanks for hosting and all of the food/drink! What a setup!

Sylvie - you sent the PM to me, I was the right guy to send it to - Peter and I are both on the same learning curve.

I've found that CEG4048 on www.ukaps.org has some great info!

By the way, I gave my tank a good trim and I have tons of cuttings. Especially Ludwigia sp. 'Rubin' and Ammannia gracilis. I have a few dozen stems of ludwigia and several large stems of ammannia. Free to whoever needs them. This weekend only, after this, they go in garbage :)

I'm ready too! But I'm not around much in the summer so couldn't host. But would make time for another gathering.

I haven`t host one of these in a while and I now have 3 tanks...hmmm 4 if you count the original which is now not doing extremely well. But it would show the difference between CO2 and none. Personally I was amazed at the difference!

So, I am available pretty much anytime - I think we wanted to stick with a weekend time right? Last weekend in May?

Did you guys decide on a date?

I would like to attend the next meeting if possible. I'm especially interested in getting advice on trimming and E.I. dosage.
