Title: Fish in school pt 2
Post by: Nerine on June 06, 2013, 09:27:10 PM
Well I got the school set up with a 10 gallon tank and some platties :) We have a care sheet printed and hung above the tank and the kids all participated by bringing in decorations and plants (all had to be approved before they could go in the tank)
They have been taking good care of the fish and I go in once a week to clean the tank :)

And so far - we've had about a dozen fry! The kids have been overjoyed!! I've done a few presentations and taught the children how to care for them...it was quite interesting the response and every day on the bus now I get updates on the fry and parents!!

For the younger kids, next semester am thinking of setting up a darkling beetle tank!! (Mine rivals the nature museum's display of darklings!!!!!)

Very nice initiative! Kudos on educating them with the proper care and maintenance and introducing them to the aquatic world  8)

Now that school is over - the 9 platies were divided up into 3 groups and their offspring also divided up amongst the class!!! They were all given a care sheet and some tips!! They LOVED them! and loved watching the babies grow and now I've been asked to put a tank in every classroom for fall!!! I will need supplies though...I donated everything that I had! time to start searching for 10 gallons and supplies to help out!!! also in the JK/SK class they are getting a fish tank AND beetle tank!! :) they are excited for fall already knowing that they are getting more fish!! I was thinking since they share class rooms for different activities to get different fish for each room!! danios/guppies/platies/convicts !!!

I have a 10g, hib aquaclear filter and coralife light strip to donate. But all needs some serious cleaning. I'd be happy to help if you want them. Think I have some flourite substrate lying arouns too.

I just set up a second tank in school!!!!
YAY! though I ran out of plastic plants! also need to get some more live plants for them too :)

I've set them up with 3 guppies to start (don't want to shock the tank!) and will have to go buy more (mine are much too young to transport!) to add to their tank, and then they can watch them breed as well!!! :) I think I'm just as excited as they are!! I am working on getting tanks in the other classrooms too (we had to get a new tank as someone dropped one oops!)

I also set up a tank of mealworms upstairs and they are having a wonderful time with them too! now if only we could set up a tank with fish that would eat them ;) hahaha
