Title: Algae scrubbers
Post by: ajm1961 on October 07, 2014, 09:22:33 PM
Perhaps I haven't paid attention to past posts or discussions, but until I stumbled across the following video from UaruJoey (The King of DIY), I hadn't really thought about adding an algae scrubber to my aquariums.

Anybody here use one? How has it improved your water quality? Does it also help avoid nuisance algae on your aquarium glass and other surfaces? I'd love to know...

It is very helpful when algae forms on glass as you can get rid of it with just a few swipes without getting dirty. It does however have its problems because if left in your tank or if you bring it to close to the substrate snails and rocks can get in the bristles which will scratch the glass. Another thing is that they cannot get rid of all algae and a scrapper is usually needed.

Sorry don't know about the water chemistry though.

The algae scrubber is actually a device that "traps" algae by promoting its growth. Not to be confused with an algae scrubbing brush - I know it sounds a lot alike. Have a look at the video, it gives you an idea. I found it very interesting. It seems to be used more prevalently in saltwater tanks (based on what I've seen online) but it can be used in any tank.

Anyway, anyone else ever use one of these? How has it worked for you? And does it help keep algae from forming elsewhere in the tank?
