Title: Is this algae?
Post by: George2 on February 06, 2016, 10:05:46 PM
Hi,

I set up a 5 gallon tank about 1 week ago but now notice some white stuff forming on my driftwood. It looks like some sort of white algae.(Please see the attached images)  Does anyone know what it is and how I can get rid of it?

Thanks!
George

I think it's some kind of fungus. It's really normal for driftwood in new tanks. It'll go away on its own fairly soon (couple weeks I wanna say), don't worry about it!

Thanks. I'll wait and see what happens. Hopefully it'll go away soon.

Its a mini bacterial bloom due to whatever is leeching out of the wood - its temporary and snails and Otos will actually eat it. Will disappear soon enough.

You can also siphon it out with a python, in my experience it comes off quite easily if you disturb it.

it's caused by adding new driftwood.  looks gross, but it will go away in a couple weeks.  it's some kind of slime mould.
