Title: TANK DISASTER
Post by: Nelson on December 22, 2005, 02:52:03 PM
I just returned from Ray's place and regret to inform everyone that he had an electrical fire at his home last night. He was out at the time and came home to a house completely covered in soot. Insurance considers it a complete write-off. Words cannot describe the carnage to his property and his many marine tanks.
One 220 gal tank exploded and all the marine fish in all his tanks perished. His two large dogs suffered smoke inhalation and have been hospitalized.
If anyone has any free space in their marine tank to baby-sit corals for Ray he would greatly appreciate it. I unfortunately can't locate his address but many of you know where he lives. Possibly someone can post it.

Is Ray at home now Nelson so I can call him. Ray lives just off Bank Street South - near Kitchener st. Not far from South Keys shopping plaza and South Bank Dodge/Chrysler.

The tank that exploded was the huge one in the basement. I just returned from another trip to his house to pick up some more coral and inverts and he seems to have most of what is salvagable in new homes for the time being. It will be a long time before he's back up and running. I have his address now so anyone who wishes to go over can pm me. He has a working phone and temporary power.

so sorry to hear that!! I've had 2 friends lose their homes the same way, electrical fires (however both of their fires were the result of metal halide lighting).
If i can be of any assistance PLEASE let me know by pm or email
I can't help with the aquatic stuff but i can push a broom like no other.
My husband recently visited Ray and also sends his sympathies, he fell in love with Rays puffers and the dogs. :( Such a tragedy.

Ray's nickname is "ray" and I assume the tank exploded from the heat.

The problem began with a short circuit in a light over the tank. There was very little fire damage but all three floors are covered with thick black soot. Ray speculates that the film of soot on the water in his tanks prevented the gas exchange. The coral absorbed all the oxygen killing the fish. I'm going out tomorrow to buy a back-up battery operated air pump.

I have a salt water tank, albeit small, but you'd be surprised what I could fit in there in a pinch. If he needs somewhere to store stuff, I can squeeze some things in. And when he is ready to start again, he is welcome to frags of what I got to get him started again.
I am sorry to hear about this tragedy. I am glad that no one (except the fish and dogs) were hurt in the fire.

Wow. That's truly horrible. :(
I know how the black soot thing is. When I was living in Germany we had a fire in the basement of my building. I wasn't there - so the door to my room was closed. But the door to our flat was left open by my flatmates and so were all their doors. The next day everything was covered in soot from the smoke. We threw out a ton of food, everything needed to be scrubbed, all the dishes needed washing. Ever inch. Except my room. I was the lucky one.
So I know what he's going through in that respect... In terms of the loss of fish and other livestock, damage to the house, and so forth... I can't even imagine.
