Title: What's breeding in your tanks these days?
Post by: Jody on April 08, 2020, 11:41:11 AM
Hiya folks,
Since we are home, and potentially paying more attention to our tanks, I wanted to check out if anyone had anything interesting breeding these days.

For me, I have a few fish breeding, with one that I am pretty excited about.
So right now, I have fry of: (bolded are C.A.R.E.S. species)
Lots of guppies - red scarlet, Red tail veil snakeskin, black moscow, blue moscow, Black metallic, mixed black
Endlers - Rio morichal, red neon and yellow tiger
Lamprologus ocellatus
Neolamprologus similis - I didn't notice that it was a pair in the far back corner of the tank breeding, with a bunch of good sized fry now
Blue Daisy's ricefish - about 6 couple month old fry, and I noticed 1 or 2 new ones in the adult's tank last night.
Amatitlania nanolutea - 2 pairs with fry right now.
Astatotilapia latisfasciata - I have females holding, 1-2 month fry and some 2" size
Bushynose plecos - A long brown male with albino regular fin females = lots of mixed regular and longfin albino and brown fry
Chapalichthys pardalis - leopard goodeid. These guys are neat, but super predatory to their fry. If I don't pull the female, the male will eat or kill every baby within the day.
Astatotilipia sp thick skin #44
Stomatepia pindu - These guys are cool. I have been working with this group for about 2 years, maybe 2 and a half. Care wise they are easy, don't bother each other or anyone else too much. They have bred a few times for me, but this is the first time I have gotten fry from them. They like to breed just before I go on holidays, where I have no chance to save the fry. Other times they have bred, eaten the eggs, then bred again, so when I pull the female at about 2 weeks, they are just fresh eggs, which didn't make it in the tumbler. This fish, will spit fry or eggs every time they are caught, so they need to be ready to go. Finally, last week I was able to get a female at the right time, and saved about 26 fry from her. Very excited about this one.

Plus I also have fry from, but no current breeding, with reason why there is no breeding
Astatotilapia nubila - the male killed the last female
Astatotilapia calliptera - tank crashed on holidays, lost the group of adults
Julidochromis marlieri gombe - sold the parents at auction and didn't realize that the tank was full of fry
Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi - male died 2 days after breeding

So what do you have going at your place?

I found a couple of baby Panda Cory's in my planted 75 gallon.  I'm not really doing anything special.

I've got more endlers than you can count, but that's it. Nice work on the breeding!

I have the same pure strain of Endler's livebearers that I've had going for 17 years.

I have been quite delighted with my long fin White Cloud Mountain Minnows.  They have been breeding slowly but steadily since I set thenm up in this 10 gallon in December.

Flatfish - Nice! I have a couple of pairs set up in breeding tanks at the moment, just seeing what will happen.

Nyx- Wow! 17 years is amazing. I might have to get some from you at some point.

I got 3 brachardis from the store to add in to the tank with my remaining daffodil brachardi (for some reason the other two I had didn't make it) and low and behold.....he's now the tank stallion!  I've got 3 different breeding sites in the tank with a female at each and he goes back and forth between them basically staying a week at a time at each site.  I'm counting about 40-50 fry of different ages likely 4 different spawns.  I had to start up a second tank as my hap mooris decided to ambush a site and feed up.

I'm looking forward to seeing if they turn out regular or daffodil!

Anyone have suggestions as to a better way to extract babies without tearing apart the whole tank?
