Title: I finally have an aquarium with water in it
Post by: Muad'Dib on January 13, 2021, 09:58:22 PM
Well I have an aquarium up and running (Read going through the cycling process)
It's not the 50 gal tank I was hoping for.. that still needs parts... But I do have my 12 gal Hospital / Isolation tank going.
I actually set it up last weekend, but didn't have enough filtration or water movement in it so I when I checked on it this morning there was a massive slime algae bloom.
I may also have had the temp too high. I had it set for 80.5. I've since dropped it to 78.5.
So much it actually chocked out the filter motor.
So tonight I did a 40% water change, scrubbed down the tank, and filter. then changed the filter media by adding more activated charcoal.
Then setup a second filter.
I now have an Aquatop 25 UV filter
And now a Two Little Fishes Media Reactor with Activated Carbon and Phosphate Minus, extra foam filters and Nylon pot scrubbers as the / mechanical  and bio media.
All powered by a submersible power head as the pump.
I also added an air stone, but may take that out we'll see. I think the HOB filter aerates enough.

It's not my aquarium dream aquarium but it's a baby step, and I can now say " I have an aquarium up and running".

The good thing is that if I can accelerate the cycle process, I can then actually get the fish I want for the big tank and house them here for a few weeks if need be. (Assuming I get fry or younglings... I wouldn't want a school of full grown cichlids in there.
