Title: Hair algae advice please
Post by: Gowalkitoff on December 07, 2025, 06:58:45 PM
Hi everyone

I'm looking for advice on my incessant hair algae problem. In my 20 years I've never had an issue I couldn't fix. I would think it's overstocked if my nitrates weren't under 5. I lightly feed every 3 days. No algae wafers. I think the light is too strong and I need a cheaper less intense light off Amazon. Would appreciate thoughts please. Starved pleco is not keeping up, usually they have for me. The algae is coating everything. I'm doing manual removal is a fork and tweezers. I've tossed plants and replaced. Added floating plants. Light is on 5h a day, on a timer. The lamp beside it is never on because of this.

Planted
Seachem fluorite
1 Betta
1 young bn pleco
6 Ember tetras

I also had issues with hair algae.  Do you add fertilize?  For me, I went from fertilizing two or three times per week to only once a week.  I use a fertilizer bottle with pump and I only do one pump per 10 gallons.

Does you light get hot?  You could try taping paper around it.  The paper will diffuse the light a bit.  I use landscape fabric.

Thanks Lucius. No I do not fertilize, I do tanks as low tech as possible. Yes the light gets hot to touch. I ended up purchasing a light from Amazon that I can reduce the intensity of.
