Title: Shout Out to Python Gravel Cleaner/Tank Filler!
Post by: apistome on January 30, 2006, 02:23:03 PM
I know most of you probably have one but if you don't:

:P These guys made my Sunday afternoon adventure in aquascaping so much easier. I think I paid $44.00 with OVAS discount, but if you need a cheaper one here is a link to a DIY version:

But the original is well worth the price.

 Brilliant, simple design, works really well even with lower pressure (I live on 3rd floor)

Get the quick connect adapter, and you'll have the unit for years.

The biggest flaw is that you are constantly screwing plastic threads onto metal ones... eventually the plastic threads strip.

With the quick connect adapter, you only have to screw it into the "T" once... then its metal to metal anytime you need it.

If you don't have one, get one!

Anyone with a python will swear by it.  This past Sunday I actually timed myself doing a waterchange on 7 tanks; took about 20 minutes TOTAL.  Man, that beats using buckets for sure.

I would die without my python.

OK, maybe that's a bit extreme... but it's fantastic!

Yeah a salesperson at BA Innes suggested getting it too but at the time I didnt see why. Makes sense I will pick one up.

My Python came with an order form for Python Products "No Spill Clean and Fill" underwear, men's and ladies. I thought it was pretty bizarre when I saw it but I think I may order some now

They may seem very expensive at first... but it's definitely a worthwhile investment. DEFINITELY.

I got a python (25 foot one) as well...  It worked great!!!!  I am not carry 14 buckets of water and lifted them 5 feet in the air and dump them on my 72 gallon :P

Now,I regret that I didn't get a 50 foot one initially....  I'll probably pick up a 25 foot extension hose or something like that....

Is there some way to hook pythons up to standard bathroom sinks or bath tubs?

A python is DESIGNED to hook into bathroom or kitchen sinks.

The metal adapter has an inside and an outside thread so it will work with most faucets.

If you have an odd shape, they also have a universal adapter (basically a large gasket with a hose clamp)

I have seen handheld shower attachments that can fit over a bathtub faucet so you can convert your tub into a shower for around 15.00. you could unscrew the handheld part and it should be the same size as the python. I know thats what I would need for my bathroom tub or sink. I tried the Universal adapter but it didnt have enough to grab onto. I have enough hose to get to my kitchen sink which has a standard size tap.

Just buy a garden hose and attach the garden hose to the sink and then the other end to the python.  Way cheaper then the extension and works great.  I got one at Rona last week for 10 bucks.

If only salt water came out of faucets!! then my python would be great on all my tanks!

Thanks for the advice Insane79....  Another member of the forum also pointed me to an ad in usedottawa.com about a relatively new python extension hose....   I think it was selling for 20 bucks...  Not a bad price....

Make your own extension.  Pythons use the popular Melnor lawn and garden hose connectors found at CTC and Home Depot.

I would recommend getting just the python itself at a LFS then go to Rona/Homedepot etc and get all of the other pieces (adapters, connectors etc). Much more cheaper. You can also buy an extention of the same hosing by the foot.
