Title: 108 gallon - lighting options
Post by: garnpet on February 09, 2006, 07:52:08 AM
I will be setting up a 108 gallon tank (60x18x24)in the near future. It will have some Val, Amazon swords, a couple of crypts and the usual assortment of other plants.

What would be my best lighting option.

1) Keep my 48" 130W (I don't think this would be enough light)
2) Purchase 2-30" @ 130W each
3) Purchase another 48" 130W and use two of them
4) Purchase a new 48" 260W

Would the fact I have 6 inches on each side without lights make any difference?

Asthetics does not matter as the tank is going to be built into a wall.

Thanks

Ooh, congrats! You're really going to go with your built-in??? She finally broke down and let you do it?

Are you implying that I needed my wife's permission to do this?

Well you are right.....

This is not the built-in that she really wanted, the one she wants is a 6 foot tank built into a wall unit / book case in the basement.  This one will be for my office/computer room.

I promised it would cost very little as I would not be buying another tank but rather replacing the 48 gallon.

Paleofishgirl, are you interested in a 48 gallon?

If looks aren't important I would DIY a 2 x 54 watt T5 HO setup to go along with your existing 130W.  It would be cheaper than buying a second 130 and provide you with enough light.

I presume that if I have 48" lights (260W) on the 60" tank I should be ok?
