Title: Suction cups that (don't) suck
Post by: fishycanuck on May 18, 2006, 09:54:02 PM
What to do?
The suction cups that hold my filter tubing and heater to the wall of the aquarium don't stick. They are second hand, so I didn't expect them to be perfect, but I'm stumped. Is there a way to revitalize them, or can I buy new ones for Eheim filter tubing and Jager heaters??

Which side of the glass are you trying?

Actually, you can try cleaning them, but they do deteriorate over time, but they are purchasable anywhere.

Would putting a drop of silicon on it and then sticking it to the glass be a good ideal?  It wouldn't be permanent but it also wouldn't be easy to remove.  Also you might have to drain the tank and let the silicon dry for a day.

The other thing you could check for is the surface of the glass they are sticking to, perhaps a good wipe to ensure a clean spot might help.

Glad this was posted I have had probs with these %$#@$#& things as well. I have some that are turning hard, and found that putting them in hot water does rejuvinate them to a softer more usable state for a period of time sometimes up to a month or two. And if you get REAL frustrated I just throw them out so I never have to see it again.

IMHO, chuck em and replace.  A "sucky" suction cup last year went on a spraybar and resulted in a 30gal tank emptying itself overnight on my carpet.

Speaking of suction cups......
there are two kinds.......
ones which are made of plastic material.such as the ones some heaters
have which in due time become brittle and really stop working
normally brown in color or grey.
and there are the ones made of rubber material...which most
power heads have.excellent material and very lasting........
which brings me to what our member is asking....
Big als/SP/ have this types.......
under $2.99
bought some 2 years ago.......and still going strong.......
but hee... price is was under $2.99 so it paid itself many times over.
just my 2 cents. :D
