sorry, I am too cheap... I gotta keep using my 1200gph 35 gallon airtight see-through rubbermaid sponge filter I never clean... :D
hehe.hows that going? What ever works it what i always say. I only got this because i was tired of maintaining 2 404's when i could have 1 FX5 which is 2 x the 2 404's.
Hey, ya I'm using an FX5 in an 80 with oscar. Water changes once a week and only changing, I'd say less than 15%. Husband says why does the fish get a whirlpool bath and we don't. ::) Anyway, very pleased with the way it's running. The kids are entertained every time it purges air from the system. Runs very quiet.
yes it does. I love it! Its an amazing size for 100g plus. i guess 80g would be ok...seems a lil bit much seeing as i think 80g are only 4ft long. but heck GO OVER FILTERING CREW!!! :D
I'll probably be putting one on my 72 gallon bowfront. :o
I was going to put a second 404 on there anyway. But I figure why not just go for an FX5?
I'm going to custom make a spraybar though, since Hagen still hasn't come out with one.
speaking of filtration, I never appreciated how much filtration a planted/community tank needs. I had a 33 gal with an XP1 on it, which was all fine and dandy, so I figured, no problem, a Fluval 304 will be lots for a 90 gallon. LOL, wrong
I have one on my 225 with a fluval 404 aswell an I love it I wanna get another one in a couple of omonths for my 225 an get rid of the 404 all togethor
Bought an FX5 today. VERY impressive filter, but expected more flow from it. Definitely a keeper though - not many canisters out there with built in electronics.
awesome to hear Nelson...i was that little voice in ur head stating to buy it! :) Mwahahaha

Yep, it was you!!! But I'm very pleased with it. BTW, nobody better tell me that OVAS discounts are worth the cost of membership....I saved a bundle!
you saved around 50-60$ on it..where did u get it from?

PetSmart on Merivale...oddly the cd manual couldn't load, tried it on four computers. No real problem though, downloaded the .pdf from the net.

Nelson, my CD doesn't work with M. Media player, but works in Power DVD 5.0
one side is PAL and the other is NTSC or w.e ...i think u need to play side A
Ah! Now that explains why you were selling your 404s.
Now I am starting to think I don't have enough filtering for my 72gal bow front using the one 404 I am buying off you. I guess I'll wait and see. I have not even bought the tank yet.
BTW, can someone explain the need for one of these kickass filters? I am not trying to be smart, I am new to all this. I know over filtering is good but in what way (ex. more time between filter cleaning, clearer looking tank)
Thanks
you still need to do the weekly water changes in my view. I do at least once a week. It basically allows you to control your water perameters, amount of fish can be raised, and you basically have a very clean, clear tank. I love to over filter. I think the 404 will be fine for a 72g. The bigger canister/HOB can also allow you to put more media and have more surface to allow more water to be cleaned at once. Also more current in most cases set through your tank. The 404 is adjustable and the FX5 i think uses its smart technology to adjust to what is needed for the tank.
You know, just my 2 cents...(and I mean it, it's just my opinion)...
Technically, you can't "over filter". I mean, your tank load produces a certain amount of ammonia, which needs a certain amount of bacteria to convert to nitrate, and there is a certain amount of physical gunk to pull out via mechanical means.
The FX5 is a nice filter, but it's rated for a tank up to 400 gallons...don't you think the talk of putting one on a 72 gallon tank is a bit much?
I mean, there's over filtering...then theres OVER over filtering...

In a lake you have millions of gallons but not as many fish inches per gallon.. ;D

My logic is though... if you can, why not?
Well, it's a question of wasting your money or not. If you hook up a filter with 5 times the surface area than is needed already for the fishload, and then you talk about hooking up a second biofilter, it seems like a waste of money and effort and power.
Don't get me wrong; the FX5 is a nice filter. But talk of hooking up it AND something else?

What if the filter dies? The fact there's a backup can save lives!! the humanity if he didn't have a backup!@! ::)
I give up :) Back to designing my DIY Canister.
well i needed to stop it to put in some carbon...that was by far the easiest filter i have fittled with! My hat is off to Fluval for this Canister.
When I had my heavy duty african tanks I always tried to filter it at least the tank volume x10 per hour
filter rant on.
I have been using a Fluval 304 on my 90 for the last month or so and it is a pathedic excuse for a filter. I used to use an Eheim 2226 and it was absolutely incredible, a dream to maintain. I am going to hobble by on my 304 and maybe add a powerhead with a quickfilter on it so the tank can actually have some real mechanical filtration ;) unlike some folk here i do not have an unlimited supply of money, so eventually down the road I'll get myself set up with some real filters. like Eheims or whatever Errol uses
filter rant off

AGREE!!!! They finally came up with an absolutely trouble free, no start-up nightmares canister.
art, maybe its only pathetic becasue you have a 70g filter on a 90g tank? ???

I agree 100%.
well I indicated this fact in my first post of this thread. I realize I need more filtration but actually the tank doesn't look half bad now.
I have the 304 on my 48 gallon and it does fine, dont know how well it work work on your 90 gallon. Like earlier post I think it is rated at 70 Gallon as max tank size.
Yeah, I actually use a 204 on one of my 30gal tanks and it's wonderful.
i have no complaints except the priming function. I think they should put that smart chip design in the 05 series. But i doubt it will happen.
been running mine since FEB no problem
and for the price i got it from back then it was good :)
now the market is bringing the price down finally.
love it
maintenance free so far :)
so far nothing but good news from fellow FX5 owners. So what i think anyone with a tank over 100g should invest in one of these wonderful filters. Just makes sense to me.
