Title: xenia crashing
Post by: kennyman on June 11, 2006, 06:42:15 PM
Looks like my xenia is not going to survive the move. I was in perfect health before the move but now its been a full two weeks and my xenia is shrivled up like a old dish rag. If I leave it in ther to die will peices of the foot survive to generate new stalks? Should I cut any off of it back like they suggest on Garf?

I'm not sure what triggered the crash as my mushrooms and polyp are doing fine. Even the mystery sps seems to be growing. But the xenia has lost the will to live I fear  :(

Can it have too much flow? Will it stand better chance of recovery up high in heavy flow and light, or should I set it down low in a protected shaded crevice?

Not sure whats happening in your tank but Xenia is a very durable coral. Two years ago I bought a liverock  from marinescape that was covered with Xenia and transported it home damp only. The rock with xenia was out of water for 4 hours and came back up within a week and thrived to this day. My xenia grows in various tanks with flow or with out prefers a high flow and with or without high intensity lights, cf or mh...

That's odd kennyman, and I don't have a solution for you.  As you know xenia's are generally very foregiving.  I have them thriving in low and high water movement so I don't think that's a problem.  Have you looked at them VERY closely for parasites?  You could also post your problem on the AC site - there's many extremely knowledgeable reefers who may be able to help you out.

When I first got my xenia frag from Rockgarden, he mentioned to me that xenia is pretty unusual softy: it may just start dying without any visible cause after years of success...
I saw anemone, hairy mushrooms hurting xenia and some polyps were bleached, but returned back to normal in few days. Only when urchin nailed some stalks they shrinked and stay in this shrinked state for already month. But they are still alive and pumping.
What is your water parameters, as this can be a source of problem.

Regards

I just moved tanks two weeks ago. I used 20lb of substrate and 20lb mature LR with 20gal of water from the old tank and added another 20lb of clean LR rock and 20lb of live sand to complete the new tank. I did a 20% water change yesterday incase ther is a bit of an amonia spike. By the look of the tank Im going through a cycle agian, I just hope it goes by quickly with the mature LR to speed things up. All the livestock is doing well except the xenia.

if your tank is going through a mini cycle, that is why your xenia is shrivel up and dying. xenia is a good indicator of your water quality. I have xenia and when i see them acting funny, I check my water for abnormalities. If you combine rocks and added sand to your tank expect a mini cycle, it can effect other corals and inverts!
