Did any one had tanganyikans for auction last year?
Im looking for a few , i was just wondering if the auction was THE place to go ?
Fish change every year! We can't predict what will be there this year...but it's an event you don't want to miss!
Hey, I just saw a "post" on UsedOttawa.com to promote the event! Good job, the more people, the merrier!
There were lots of tanganyikans last year! And they went for waaay cheaper than they should have. Take advantage!
I would like to make some Donations of some new type of tropical fish food. It a new gel type of food, but I would Donation it for the Raffle, is this possable??
Thanks
George
George that would be great.
For all those plant Gurus out there, remember that beautiful Starfire aquarium that was set up for us at January's meeting?
It's going to be up for grabs! Tank, Lighting, Soil, Rocks and wood...it could be all yours! PLUS the auction has always been a great place to buy plants to fill up this gem!!
Here's a Reminder:
Here's another Teaser...
We'll be setting up a nice Raffle Prize with this little fishy!
Will we have saltwater tank for frags this year?
We'll see how many frags we end up with. I don't believe it's in the plans this year (short on volunteers) but we're very adaptable if someone steps up to set it up AND we have enough of a demand for it.
I'm hoping to make it this year, will anyone be putting in any SW fish?
I sure hope to come!
Karen here, still sad that I had to back out of volunteering, but I still want to donate snails (ramshorns, MTS) for the auction. How do I do this? Show up at 10 with tubs of snails? Also, if anyone can suggest good ways to capture them?

Drop in a piece of zucchini, lettuce or algae wafer and they'll gather
like moths to a light. Bag them up and bring them in :).
Great idea on the veggie do draw the snails in. Now then, what time shall I drop them off, and Ill not be available to take them back if they go unsold. Do you still want them as a donation?
Hello!!
How long is the Auction?
....Can one show up and buy raffle tickets and leave?(I've a 2 yr old that wont sit for long)
sure wish I had someone to mind him, i'd love to get my hands on some sw equipment.
Shannon
The Auction proper starts at noon and usually finishes between 5:00 and 6:00.
For the raffle tickets, you have to be present to win.
Here are a few of the Raffle Prizes!
Bring some extra cash to buy your raffle tickets! There are some great prizes available!
Fishnut, your making me all the more depressed. LOL!!!
.....have a two year old that would never sit still, dont have anyone to look after him for a few hours, dont have a drive there, etc....
I'm so definitely going next year and bringing my future 3 yr old.
(oh ,and are we allowed to bring a 3yr old to ovas meetings? Cause thats the only thing thats stopping me)
yes :) give me a heads up and I will have some goodies there!! I bring my 3yr old every once in awhile (I stopped recently due to I'm in town ALLL day and he gets super cranky by the time midnight rolls around haha)
Ah Kool :0)
I'm all happy now !!
All children are welcome. :)
Very nice door prizes!
Kids are welcome! Bring some things for them to do...colouring, quiet toys, etc. My 2 year old usually stays home with daddy, but if he needs to go my blackberry is a great source of entertainment as he watches home movies of himself.
:)
So who is bidding on the starfire 48 gallon kit ? :)- i want to know who i`m up against ;)
Not a bad kit - great tank-all panel starfire glass rimless, great ADA soil & 2 bags to booth T5HO 4x36 watts lighting with moon lights & some really nice Dragon stone rock with some driftwood for good measure, hmm have to find a spot ;D
What is the opening bid for the Starfire or is it a silent auction?
Quote from: touchofsky on March 03, 2012, 04:32:59 PM
What is the opening bid for the Starfire or is it a silent auction?
It is the silent auction. The minimum bid is set at $300. The total value of this setup is $820!
Looks like someone will be getting a deal!
In the future would we be able to have an Auction on any day other then Sunday?
You MUST be present to claim your raffle items!! They CANNOT go back with me!! I do NOT live in Ottawa :)
But you can show up at ANY time during the auction...
Bring your tot! we have colouring books just bring crayons!
Lurch - Maybe? I think Sunday has been the day that works out for most people and the room availability...
Hope you guys had a good time. I was really disappointed to miss the auction this year by my oldest boy had a karate tournament all day today and I couldn't miss that.
Jeff
Thanks to all of the executive, volunteers, sellers and buyers who made this Giant Auction a success once again. Thanks also to those who made donations so that my job of selling raffle tickets would be an easy one.
I sold everything that I brought. I only bought a couple of bags at the auction itself. Then I took my profits out into the hallway, met the raffle winner who had won the aquarium donated by Fish Tail Aquariums, ended up buying that aquarium and then proceeded to break it while loading it into my vehicle OUCH!
Contact me if you would like a broken designer aquarium 8).
Oh no!!! maybe it can be a nice planter now??? :((( so sad!!
A HUGE thank you to everyone who came out today and volunteered!!! Without you guys this auction would not have been possible!!! We got out of there EARLY!! I'm home and it's 8:35!! WOOHOO!! :D I was going to go out to eat, but decided I should get some sleep instead hahahaha
Thank you again everyone!! And a HUGE thank you to our sponsors and friends of OVAS!!
Thank you OVAS! I had a great time. rockgarden, I'm sad the tank I sold you broke :( Thankfully it wasn't an extremely expensive purchase, but still crummy nonetheless! I'm glad the rest worked out for you.
I'm resting my legs for bit and watching the curling. After that, I'll add some photos to my blog.
Take a look later tonight or on Monday. Hopefully I caught a few chuckle shots :)

Ouch, that was a nice tank.
I was the luck winner of the 37 Gallon LED kit but unfortunately my better half says we don't have room for it. I will be posting it up for sale soon.
Great job today, well done!
AdamR
Was it the trophy tank that broke? That is so sad! I have one of those tanks and they look beautiful when planted.
Yes, Thank you OVAS and everyone present for a great day at the auction! We are very happy with our sold and our bought items!! Fortunately, nothing of ours broke... : :-[
Yes, I should have mentioned how happy I am with my purchases. Thank you to all of the volunteers and organizers for a job well done. All of my creatures are home and settled in. The plants will be planted tomorrow. Thanks again everyone :).

I would love to participate and volunteer, but, for my family and I, Sundays are the Lord's Day. When is the next one scheduled for?
The Giant Auction is the first Sunday of March.
So who ended up with the Starfire 48gallon???
@Lurch - you may prefer the Monday night meetings that nearly always have an auction component. Not as big an event as the yearly auction, but they are fun and you can get some great stuff nonetheless.
Thanks to everyone who put work into the auction.
(I was so glad to drop by and get some baby snuggling in!)

I would like to add my thanks to the hard working execs & Volunteers that it made it a success.

my feet are sore ???
I'd like to say a big thank you to all the volunteers that made my first auction a good one. Next year I'll know to budget 7 hrs for my 120g setup instead of 2-3.
Again thank you to all.
It was a good day. A big thanks to all the auctioneers, the auction host, and everyone else to make this go by rather smoothly; moving 1200 item in 6 hours is quite an achievement.
Also great to see a good attendance by our fellow hobbyist from SAM/Montreal. Glad you came out and brought some interesting items with you.
I for myself didn't plan on buying much, but a few things caught my interest and made it into my box, a nice pair of not often seen apistos for example. Winning one of the raffles kept the mood up, and somehow I ended up with that tank full of dirt on my backseat ... :)
Had a blast!
Thanks to everyone for helping out and volunteering.
BTW, kudos to the chef, that pulled pork sandwich was the bomb ;)
In case you already forgot Errol, the number is 88 ;D

Congrats on the tank!
Which apistos did you end up with? I got a pair of a. sp. rotpunkt from one of the SAM member. She mentioned the LFS she got them from (when they were unsexed juvies) mentioned they were WC.
Interesting :)
I was so busy all day that I actually sold more than I bought! I don't think that ever happened before and my hubby was so happy!

Thanks so much to everyone who helped out and came out and made it a great day! My legs are tired and my throat isn't enjoying the second straight weekend of abuse. :D
Amazing job by all of the volunteers who somehow managed to pull that off in 6 hours, thanks to everyone for your understanding and everything you did to make the event go as smoothly as it did.
Rob
I fell asleep in my chair while watching the curling ::)
Then, I woke up and started posting some photos to my blog. Got as far as the cupcakes and got hungry! More images to come - OOPS already 1:30AM!
More images will be added to this blog entry later on Monday - I need some beauty rest ;D.

It was a great event - big day for our auctioneers and they were up to the task:
Rob, Matt, Brian and Errol, THANK YOU for your hard work and getting this done!
Peter and his "assistant" at the computer logging all that information, the labelling, and cashing out - that was tough work and VERY APPRECIATED!
Also thanks to:
- our "runners"
- our cashiers
- kitchen staff
- setup and tear down crew
- membership sales, raffle sales, prizes and sponsorship... whew!
And of course all of you who participated.
Applause all around!!
This was my first auction and what a day. Great job to the organizing committee and everybody that made this day a great day.
I got home with some nice plants and the 90g is now full (actually to full, I will need to buy another tank :D) I can not believe I got a filter for $5 (what a deal...) but I did miss out on the Eco Complete.

So it was Eric that had "88", i could not tell who had it, since my view was obscure by the multiple rows of heads in front of you guys, but i tried my best to inform the person behind that 88 bidding card that we preferred seeing the side with the #`s as opposed the side with the text, i was happy when the person catched on eventually, now i know who the culprit was, thanks Dan, my apologies Eric had i known it was you i would have come over & explained it quietly.

It's weird how all the other guys could see my number hey? 8)
When I first walked in the room, I was holding two cups of coffee and my purse, and didn't have a number, and bid anyway!!!! Talk about auction fun with newbies :)
I was #24 and having my gallbladder out on Friday didn't slow me down ;D
The future of OVAS :)
What a cute picture!
Thanks to the organizers and volunteers for putting this on. It's nice to see the hobby is strong and growing in Ottawa.
Glad to hear all went well ! I was all set to volunteer and participate and was really excited about it all but it was my birthday weekend and the plan was to celebrate it on Sat and volunteer/get my hands on stuff on Sunday but alas my friends surprise me with a full-day trip to Tremblant at the Birthday Dinner and this was my chain of reactions: ??? >:( :( :) :-* . I just couldn't say no since they had everything booked and planned!
The whole day I was thinking about the auction and how I could have picked up a pair of clown killis and some of those awesome bags of plants I saw on the list of items! I still had a fun birthday weekend though - hard to be sad when you're boarding down the mountain :) Attending the Auction would've made it PERFECT but maybe next year!
Regardless, sorry again I couldn't help this year Nerine but looks like it all went well! Hope to be there next year! Promise! Congrats Rob btw.. jealous! And i'll be hunting down those people who won the plants to get trimmings soon :P
It was indeed evident that this hobby is strong & growing, another thing that was apparent was the willingness of people offering their help in any way they can this certainly made for an enjoyable day among others with the same interest.

A few pics that i managed to shoot before it got wild & crazy.

Great blog and photos!
What an amazing day! Can't wait for the next one :D
I would like to thank everyone for all their help.
For my first time as Auction Chair, I think everything went smoothly except for a few minor problems.
What a long day and hectic at times.
Thanks again.
You did great Peter. ;)
Hi everyone. I would just like to thank everyone who brought plants to the auction on sunday. I got home from the auction and set up my 40 breeder with all the plants I bought and used those great aquascaping tools I came home with. Thanks Errol !! I will be posting my build in the next few days. It was my first big auction and I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the day a great success. I would love to help out next year if you need my help. Thanks.
Yesterday was my first giant auction. That was a lot of fun! I bought so many things, spent more than I planned, and I still think perhaps I should have gone for more plants and pick up more shrimps. It is probably a good balance as I am starting to run out of real estate...
To the OVAS exec and those who spent the whole day making yesterday's event so wonderful, ** THANK YOU **
You have made my day!
my throat is sore too! :(

I sold more than I brought home too :D I came home with 2 things of duckweed!! and that's it!! How crazy is that!?!?! The turtle and woodcats thank the cultivators of the duckweed :) They were thrilled and it will probably be gone by the end of the week ??? crazy how much they consume :)
Also - I second the pulled pork recipe!! it was so delish!
Thank you again everyone for making this auction amazing :)

Agreed - very refreshing to get away from the key board community & meet, share hobby talk , put faces to names & actually find out about each other :P
It was fantastic. Thanks for everyone who volunteered and participated in making it so. I came home with everything I'd been looking for and then some. What a day.
I also came home with the eheim 2217 I had my eyes on, and considering I got it for a steal/fraction of the price of a new one, my 125g SA community, and me, are very pleased. Not sure if I volunteer next time I'll be able to take advantage of some of these great deals.

It was probably the third or fourth item that went up for bid, and I was lucky enough to snag it for $80. Now my 125g has two 2217s running, one from each end. Many thanks to the seller who put this item up for auction, it was in mint condition, and they even gave my son the original receipt, with warranty still on it, when he went to pay for it.
Wow, now that is a really great seller. I didn't get to the auction until about 1:00, so I missed some of the early stuff.
I volunteer to sell raffle tickets so that I don't have time to put my hand up!!!! ;D
Getting lots of views on my photo blog of the day's event. Hopefully all of that attention will translate into ticket sales for the OVAS Earth Day Event. I've paid my $5 for a ticket. A steal of a deal!!! Let's make the Earth Day event another memorable OVAS moment!

Yeah, I almost missed out because I spent about a half hour searching for a parking spot. When I finally walked in they were just getting ready to begin the auction. Everything else was great, my only complaint of the day was the lack of parking.

Parking is one of the cons with that location, maybe we can keep an eye out for a location that has the pros of Jack Purcell with good parking & suggest them to the club
The pros i think are space & cost, city facilities are way less than other similar facilities.

McNabb Community Centre has tons of parking, is central and is city run...no idea what the cost/availability is like though.
