I'm running a fluval 404 for about 6 months.  An older book I have says I should drill a hole in the intake just below the waterline to stop the tank from emptying out if a hose bursts or the cannister leaks.  Anyone do this?  Eric

interesting, never heard of that.  why don't they just manufacture it with the hole then?   ???  anyone...?

Life is too short to wake up with regrets.  So love the people who treat you right.  Forget about the one's who don't.  Believe everything happens for a reason.  If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands.  If it changes your life, let it.  Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

I have done this for a filter (don't remember type). It never needed, but didn't cause any problems.

I would imagine people put the intake at various heights due to tank depth and preference. Having a hole already in the intake hose could render the filter useless for some. I suppose you could cut the section with the hole in it out, but I would think people would rather not have to cut up a brand new filter.

I think it would also make it harder for regular water changes. If you drill a hole just under the water line, as soon as you start doing regular water changes, you will have to go through the process of priming your filter every time to get the air out.

it's not a bad idea, if you don't trust your filter..  I didn't do it for the same reason homestar suggested

Thanks everyone.  Glad this isn't a big threat.  I figure I will leave it.  I will be sure to post if I end up regretting this...
