My parents are gutting the bathroom and renovating it and my mom is placing a claw foot bath tub in and we are taking the old tub out, now my mom wants to try and use this for some kind of pond. Is it even workable? I no its possible but with these winters theres no way the fish could stay in for winter right? I beleave a bathtub is 100 gallons? its 5 feet long maybe some one could inform me? If we do use it for filteration i was thinking a upflow filter, it sucks in from drain at the bottom and is pumped up threw a drum and is poured out in a waterfall back into the tub, would that be at all possible? Stocking ideas would be usefull as well, ive told my mom ABSOLUTLY no koi, they get WAY to big. Now that thats out of the way...would Ryukins? (spelling?) I dont no a thing about them other then that they look like a golfball LOL for goldfish what kind should we stay away from?

Personally id like to use it for a big tropical tank but my mom REALLY wants a pond, id prefer making one to how we want it id think it would be alot funner and give more room for stocking ideas.

Anyways,
help me if you dont mind

I think that would be a great idea. Over-wintering would be impossible, the water needs to be at least 4 feet deep to do this. I like the idea of draining the tub from the drain hole. I would put the return spout at the opposite end, so you get some good circulation instead of always filtering the same bit of water. Have fun doing this, be sure to post a pic afterwards.

Hi Spencer,

For sure you can keep shubunkins and goldfish in your tub. To overwinter them you need at least 20-24 inches of water. But I think your mom can better install an inground pond. She will loves that and then you can overwinter your fish also. For questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

I've seen a bathtub pond before! it was pretty cool!! plants hung over the side and you could barely tell it was a bathtub unless you got up close :)

if you decide to do it, make sure you take lots of photos :) there is always someone to take the fish in the winter if you decide not to bring them indoors or you can set up something temporary for them in a basement or garage.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the replies. The tub will be dug underground other then 2-3 inchs above the ground to stop chemicals from draining into it. Ill tell her about the current idea, it sounds cool to me, having the waterfall push the water across the tub and then it disappearing and not flooding 8) Im looking forward to this project, mom wont let us dig the hole till next year but gives me lots of time to plan how to make the filter and how the make the waterfall, i think ill try and convince her to make a stream instead. so it looks like some type of natural "pool" of water. For the winter i think we'll just pick up a 30 breeder or something or just pick up like 2-3 10 gallons and place them in there for winter, would that be ok?

Thanks Again Guys,
Spencer

Spencer,

If you want to make a waterfall, be carefull what and how you make it. Your "pond" must be able to handle the water when you shut down the pump or have a power cut. Also if you start up your waterfall, you don't want to have a "half empty" pond.

I know this is not what you are doing but it still looked really neat in this backyard I was in......
